USA Swimming hires a local coach for performance areas

Here comes some great news for a local coach who now gets an opportunity to work with national sports-science applications and swimming leaders. Way to go Dan McCarthy. I hope and imagine he'll be able to bring back tons of new opportunities for local teams, coaches and swimmers as well.

Weathers and McCarthy Join USA Swimming  (8/2/2005)

SPRINGS — USA Swimming is proud to announce that Bailey Weathers and Dan McCarthy have joined the organization as the first Sport Performance Consultants, a newly created position in the Field Services Department. In this role, Weathers and McCarthy will provide sport science and technical education and support to coaches and clubs with the goal of enhancing athlete performance.

Coach Weathers comes to U.S.A. Swimming after spending the last ten years as the Head Women’s Coach at Notre Dame University.  At Notre Dame he won 9 straight conference titles and in 1986 was named the NCAA Coach of the Year.  Bailey also has experience in the club ranks, coaching at Mission Aurora in Colorado.  Coach Weathers attended Indiana University where he received his B.S. in Physical Education while working with the legendary Doc Counsilman.  Bailey then attended graduate school at the University of Texas, earning an M.S. with a specialty in Exercise Physiology.  While at Texas, he assisted many-time Olympic Coach Richard Quick.

Coach McCarthy has 15 years experience as a Head Coach, the last three years with the Greater Pittsburgh Aquatic Club. Dan attended the University of Pittsburgh where he received his B.A. in Political Science and later an M.S. in Exercise Physiology. While at Pitt, Dan honed his coaching skills working with both the University Men’s program and the local USA Swim Club.  He has been the head coach of two clubs in the Pittsburgh area as well as the Foothills Swim Club in Colorado.

The Sport Performance Consultants will focus on helping coaches make better use of sports science and technology in their training programs. They will also provide services and educational resources to clubs similar to that provided to USA Swimming National Team members by the National Team Technical Support group.

Club Development Division Director, Pat Hogan commented; “We have spent over a year searching for the right individuals to fill these spots and we are very pleased with the results of that search. We are also very excited about initiating the third part of our field services plan. The new Sport Performance positions will provide a nice complement to the services already being provided to clubs and coaches by our Sports Development Consultants and Master Coaches. The first stop for the new consultants will be the USA Swimming Summer Nationals and Junior Nationals in Irvine.  They will both begin making visits to USA Swimming clubs in the fall.

For more information, please contact Ira Klein, Field Services Director at 719.866.3546, or Pat Hogan, Club Development Director, at 719.866.3534.
