KDKA show host bumped Carlynton discussion

Sadly, the show host seems to have bumped the 10:05 segment about kids.

Rather, he wants to talk about a goofy politician who lost his gun and it killed a guy -- months ago. That turned into a witch hunt -- and that turns Marty on, I guess.

Hi Marty,

The guest you had scheduled posted dozens of signs around her school
district to tell people of YOUR SHOW and to tune in at 10:05 am.

You bumped her.

I used some web tools to get listeners from all around the globe too
via blogger and twitter, etc.

This is about "self responsibility" -- a buzz of yours. The parents
want to raise kids without big road blocks from the school board.

Bill Cowher grew up in Carlynton -- years ago. When school officials
all got along with community helpers.

That isn't happening in PITTSBURGH now.

How many OLYMPIANS do we have in the region?

Our kids are getting the shaft. That's why people leave Pittsburgh and the region.

I am not up on the issue yet...have not had the time...and wanted to be
informed.
Its terms of it not being good....
Okay.
Better to bump them and do the right thing.

For your education:

1. School board jacks up prices for participation in youth sports.

2. Kids get raw deal.

3 In turn:
-- kids get fat
-- kids have nothing to shoot for
-- trouble brews
-- kids shoot at each other with guns
-- people move away

4. Volunteers, coaches, parents, get frustrated.
-- more people move away

Carlynton School Directors Killing Youth Sports
To: mgriffin@kdka.com, rush@kdka.com

Marty:

I urge you to cover the egregious policy passed by the Carlynton school board. It will kill the few after-school sports programs available to kids, especially kids under age 13. In essence, the board wants to get rid of all kids in programs unless they are from Carlynton. They do that by slapping outrageously high fees both to the non-resident kids and the clubs who admit them. Youth program leaders repeatedly told the directors that such a policy would kill their programs. yet the directors went ahead and made such a policy and they did it in an underhanded way - they didn't tell the public they would vote on the specific policy at their last board meeting and they didn't unveil the specific policy to the public until they took the vote!

Kids need to have programs that help them shoot for goals, rather than shooting at each other in turf war madness and boredom! Having programs that serve youths, regardless of where they're from, does just that. Why would anyone want to make policy against helping kids learn to better themselves and to get along?

I want to come on your show so everyone knows about what is going on in Carlynton. This district already has few options for kids. Now the directors are taking what little these kids have away. Of note, 40% of the elementary school kids are on some form of public assistance. These kids already have enough hurdles in their lives. Why is the school board making policies to make it harder for their parents to provide for them?

We need you, Marty, to help these kids!

Here's a Wiki page that will give you details on the specific policy and how it was passed, including a video of the actual meeting. Watch it and see the egregious way these directors passed the policy. http://fixpa.wikia.com/wiki/New_Carlynton_Facilities_Policy

Here's my blog on the topic: http://Carlynton.blogspot.com

and here is just one of the letters sent to the editor of the Signal Item about this issue. I have links on my Wiki pages to other letters and more background information.

Marty, please help!

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears -- or rather your jeers for Carlynton school board members Tom Brown, Patty Schirripa, Tom DiPietro, Sandra Hughans and Ray Wolkowiak, who railroaded through a new facilities policy without letting the public -- or their fellow board members -- know what they were planning to do. Why the secrecy and the hurry? Why did they ram this policy down the throats of residents when all groups affected by the policy repeatedly and publicly stated it would hurt them and, more importantly, the kids of this district?

The new policy charges parent-run clubs thousands of dollars in "rent" for admitting more than 10% non-residents AND charges those out-of-district kids $100/quarter to play sports with our kids. Don't be fooled by the public "spin" the directors fed this and other newspapers. This is not "cost recovery" or "paying for wear and tear". It's highway robbery aimed at getting rid of non-residents from our sports clubs. If "being fair to district taxpayers" is really their motive, why does the new policy target only sports clubs and not all clubs?

Here in Carlynton it's not "Love thy neighbor" but rather "Gouge thy neighbor". Take a look at the district's budget - our 15,500 residents spend $1.8 million a year to operate and maintain all our facilities. Do the math - we pay less than $120 a year for facilities to provide our children with an education and after school activities. Yet, these directors think it's "fair" to charge our kids' friends $400 a year to play sports with them a few hours a week?

The directors are right about one thing - we do need to charge people not contributing to our tax base a fee for using our facilities. But that fee needs to be both fair to district taxpayers and reasonable. That way, the district can recover some costs while not turning people away in disgust or, worse, revenge. The Carlynton gymnastics team uses Montour's facilities because Carlyton has none. Hopefully, Montour won't turn around and charge our team over-priced rent PLUS $100 per quarter per gymnast to use their facilities.

We tell our children to share. Why can't the people we elect to represent us do the same? Apparently, everything these five directors needed to know they didn't learn in kindergarten. Send them to the principal's office, or better yet, out of office come election time.
