I am proud to announce the launch of my new book, Start An Epidemic: Ignite Change With Social Marketing, available only at www.ignitechanges.com.

The first chapter is free to download now.

I wrote this book with two purposes in mind:

First - Provide the tools you need to ignite positive change in your program or organization.  This book offers clear, pragmatic, low-cost, and easy-to-understand steps on how to integrate social marketing into your approach to create positive, sustainable, and cost-effective change.

Second - To raise awareness about the hidden global epidemic of drowning and to share what organizations around the world are doing to end drowning.

A new approach to change requires a new approach to sharing information, so this book will be only be available as downloadable chapters, approximately once a month, at www.ignitechanges.com.  The intent is to give you time to absorb and begin to integrate each step before moving forward.  This approach also makes it possible for people all over the world to easily access the information.

The first three chapters will be available at no charge.  This gives you an opportunity to assess whether social marketing is the right tool for you.  Chapters 4 through 12 will be available at $1.50 per chapter.  Chapter 13, which summarizes how we can integrate social marketing into our drowning prevention efforts, will be available at no charge.

I hope you will visit www.ignitechanges.com, download Chapter 1, and begin to ignite change.

Warm regards,
Rebecca

Fwd: As we know . . . Super Syria Tutorial in Video Lecture

---------- Forwarded message from John H. ----------

As we know that fateful day of destiny is fast approaching when one or the other of the two worst candidates for president in American history will assume the mantle of the presidency.  Perhaps it is time we start thinking about just how this all came about and what, if anything, can be done to prevent a similar situation four years hence – assuming, of course, that we manage to avoid thermonuclear war in the interim.

Nothing we have done up until now has managed to move the nation away from the status quo; and with the prospect of another four years of neocon incited war and neoliberal economic and political machinations it is more than likely that the prospects for most Americans (and much of the rest of the world) will be significantly diminished.  So, if we don't commence now to develop some alternative options it may be too late for all of us.  Read the attachments and watch the lengthy video about the war in Syria (it's worth it) by a very conservative Virginia state senator and retired Marine officer who went there to investigate and see what you think.

Fwd: TPP country just jailed another blogger

--------- Forwarded message ----------

Update from Public Citizen

Just weeks before possible consideration of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), one of the countries that signed the deal has demonstrated yet again its complete disregard for human rights.

Vietnam has just arrested a blogger — Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quynh — on charges of "spreading propaganda against the state."

Ms. Quynh could be imprisoned for up to 12 years. Why? She wrote a blog post criticizing her government's handling of a toxic chemical spill at a foreign-owned steel mill.

If this is what the Vietnamese government does when the TPP is pending and under a spotlight, imagine what would occur if the TPP were passed.

Urge your member of Congress to speak out for Ms. Quynh's freedom and publicly declare opposition to the TPP now.

Unfortunately, Ms. Quynh's arrest is not an isolated incident.

The U.S. State Department has documented Vietnam's human rights violations, including "arbitrary or unlawful killings" and "continued [efforts] to suppress political speech through arbitrary arrest, short-term detentions without charge and politically motivated convictions."

Human Rights Watch has described worsening human rights abuses in Vietnam: "Basic freedoms of expression, association, and assembly are extremely limited. The media and Internet are controlled and censored. The Vietnamese Communist Party controls all public institutions and uses them to maintain its hold on power."

The TPP's proponents claim that the deal will improve the human rights crisis.

But we've heard such platitudes about past trade agreements improving human rights — and then once a trade deal is passed, children, workers and activists languish without conditions improving.

Enough is enough: Tell your representative to speak out for human rights for Ms. Quynh and others, and to oppose the TPP today.

That Vietnam would make such a baseless and high-profile arrest right now — when countries are making their final appeals for the TPP — underscores that the TPP would not help Ms. Quynh or the many others enduring the violation of their basic freedoms.

We can do better. And we must.

We must stop the corporate-rigged TPP and ensure that Vietnam is not granted privileged access to the U.S. market, despite the country's jailing of political dissidents like Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quynh.

Urge your representative to side with human dignity and against the TPP.

Thanks for all you do.

In solidarity,

Melanie Foley

Pittsburgh and North Allegheny Water Polo Squads meet up on Sunday afternoon

City middle school water polo confab with North Allegheny Tigers on Sunday afternoon.

Fwd: Understand this chart?

Forward message from John H.

Sometimes the obvious is too confounding for most of us to grasp easily. In the video linked below Professor Stephanie Kelton graphically and elegantly explains how money actually works in the American economy and why most of what people believe is simply wrong. So set aside some time for this presentation, it is something every American taxpayer and voter should see and understand.

Water Polo is happening at MACS

Love the energy and improvements with the water polo. Next, I am excited to take the squads to the next level and really COMPETE. Those lessons open up new chapters to learning, discovery and understanding in how to play well with others. Games are scheduled in the days and weeks to come.

3000 Malaysian School Children Learn Programming With LiveCode

Fadillah Iskandar is the lead trainer and content developer for the Coding@Schools program, a government funded initiative aimed at introducing primary school children in Malaysia into the world of computing and programming. She reports on the results of a national coding competition in Malaysia, where 1000 primary schoolchildren entered apps created with LiveCode.

The month leading up the National Code Challenge in Malaysia was extremely hectic but extremely rewarding and I am overjoyed with the way the event went....
