We got so many requests to offer an additional workshop on this song that is a favorite of so many and here it is!

"Learn An Emma's Revolution Song",
the "Swimming to the
Other Side"
Reprise
with Room for All!

Join us on Zoom (500-device capacity) or watch via simultaneous livestream on our Facebook page. We'll also post the session video to our YouTube channel, afterwards.

The Zoom invite is below and no reservations are required. This is a recurring meeting, so you can use the same info for every Sunday's session.

Download lyrics and chords, here. We sing "Swimming to the Other Side" in C and the chords in C are there for you to play along with, on any instrument. Folks who play guitar and use a capo can also play along with either of us, using these chord and capo setups:

Pat capos at the 5th fret and plays the song in G chord shapes
Sandy capos at the 10th fret and plays the song in D chord shapes

Both of these setups create the sounding of the song in the key of C. And, if none of this makes sense to you, no worries! We'll explain it at the session.

6 Things to do During the COVID-19 Pandemic

With virtually all swimming pools being shut down and no one allowed to meet in groups larger than 10, (smaller in some areas), what are we swimming coaches to do?

God Bless America
1.       The number one thing to do during the COVID-19 pandemic is to Focus on Things You Can Do, Not on Things You Have No Control Over. How many times have we told this to our athletes? How long is this going to last? Believe it or not you have no control over this. They are not going to ask your opinion.  So, what do you do? Plan for the worst, and hope for the best. There are options out there from Zoom meetings to group video chats that can both help your athletes and give everyone something to do to help take their minds off the craziness of the day. On a side note, please use proper protocol and professionalism at all times.

2.     Personal Health. I know that I recently went through some scary health issues. We as coaches often give to others so much of the time that we don't take the time to take care of ourselves. 30-45 minutes of some type of cardio like walking is a great place to start. A little bit of something is better than a whole lot of nothing. Spend your time eating better, getting adequate sleep, which is so important for your body to recover and stay healthy. Listen to your body, stretch in the mornings, stretch in the evenings, do some core work, (start light). Spend some time taking care of you. You will feel better and be more productive with your work.

3.       Do a sincere self-reflection of your skills and abilities. Identify some areas where you are not as strong as you need to be. Then, like coaching an IM'er, work on the weak stroke, or weak part of your coaching. You can sign up for and take courses from Udemy.com. Their courses cost anywhere from $9.99-$13.00. You can take classes on a wide range of topics. You can take free Ivy League classes at www.classcentral.com/Ivy-league-moocs. Use this time to better yourself, take computer classes, physiology classes, negotiation classes, take the classes offered through the International Swim Coaches Association (ISCA) and work on your certifications. Find an area you know you could be stronger in and aggressively attack it and make your weaknesses become strengths. If not now, when?

4.      Network with other coaches. We are all in the same situation, see what others are doing. Get on sites like Facebook and join Swim Coaches Idea Exchange Group, World's Coaches of Swimming Workout, or Swimming Injury Support and Prevention. Any and or all of these sites and others are great and very information. There are live Zoom sessions with Steve Friederang on dryland exercises. His next one is April 6 at 1:00pm Pacific Time. Dr. Gary Hall posted a medicine ball workout by Coley Stickels in a free webinar on the Race Club website. Mark Hesse from USA Swimming has been putting out some great stuff from a wide range of topics. If you are not getting what he is putting out, you are missing great information. Bob Steele is giving some talks on Facebook covering a lot of topics. His email is fastswimmin1@gmail.com to contact him. He will be giving a presentation at 1:00pm Central Time next week Monday-Friday. Sid Cassidy and others are having "Happy Hour" talks about different topics Wednesdays at 7:00pm Eastern time. There are great things going on, reach out, get on-line, and get involved.

5.      Brenden Hanson sent out an email with a lot of good information in it. If you have not read it check your LSC website. There are things in place to assist teams and coaches during these challenging times.

6.     Read some books about swimming. Bob Steele's book on Games, Gimmicks, Challenges for Swimming Coaches is on sale now at gamesgimmickschallenges.com. Ernie Maglishcho has written many great books about swim coaching. He just had a birthday Sunday. ISCA is having a big sale on several of his books. There are a multitude of other great books about swimming and swim coaching, I just knew that these two were on sale now. Talk to other coaches about some of their favorite books and spend some isolation time reading up on the craft of coaching. I will be listing a couple of books with each newsletter. Everyone is welcome to email me and give me suggestions of their favorite books:  swimcoachstaffingsolutions@yahoo.com
For swim coaches who have been furloughed or dismissed during this lockdown, shutdown or whatever you chose to call it, contact Swim Coach Staffing Solutions and get your information in our database.

SWIM COACH STAFFING SOLUTIONS is a company created by swimming coaches for swimming coaches. During this "Lockdown" time we will try and help connect swim coaches with ideas about places to watch, learn and be informed about what is going on in the swimming community. When this passes, and it will at some point, we will be here to assist coaches with finding jobs, and signing quality contracts. We will be helping teams find these quality coaches. When it is done well, the swimmers ultimately will gain the most.

Recipe of the month- This is because my wife and I love to cook and eat. I used her recipe.

Enchiladas- Preheat oven to 350. In a skillet, brown the meat and add the onion and japalinos when the meat is about half done, cook until onions are translucent and tender and most of the fluids are cooked out. Salt and Pepper. Drain and rince the black beans in a colander, pour the corn into the colander on top of the beans. Add the Rotel and the beans and corn. Cook until warm. Add 1/3 of the can of Enchillada Sauce. I have used several brands of the Enchillada sauce, Hatch Brand is the best don"t skimp here. Take off the heat and let it slightly cool, add a cup of shredded cheddar cheese once it has cooled. Stir. Spray a 13X9 baking dish with Pam Non-stick spary. Roll and arrange the enchillads in the baking dish, pour the remaining enchillada sauce all over the top, then top that with the remaining shredded cheese, cook at 350 for 30 minutes.
Ingredients:

12 Mixla tortillas, a mix of corn and flour, use flour if you can't find them
1 lb of ground turkey or ground venision (my favorite)
1 onion diced
1 diced Japalino
1 can of Rotel (low sodium)
1 can of Sweet Corn (low sodium)
1 can of Bushes Black Beans (low sodium) Go with the Bushes brand
1 large can of Hatch Enchillada Sauce Red Go with the Hatch brand
2 cups of cheddar cheese

Fwd: Capitalism has failed!

---- Forwarded message ----

From: John H

Attached is a short article by socialist economist Richard D. Wolfe discussing how capitalism has failed in fighting the Coronus virus.  While this is clearly the case, the more interesting part of this is contained in the 15 pages of comments to the article which I encourage you to read.

The long debate between capitalism and socialism has long intrigued me.  It is one which I have never been able to quite come to grips with.  As many of you may have observed, I have a great affinity for the benefits of socialism; but, I have never been able to completely distance myself from the need for some form of capitalism at least at the local end of the scale.  This is a constant battle when considering the issue of democratic-socialism which presumes the continued operation of a largely capitalistic system overlaid with social protections necessitated for the public benefit and good.

In this sense Roosevelt's New Deal policies amounted to low-end social-democratic policies glued onto a weakened framework of capitalism just saved from its own destructive ends.  Since that time we have seen several similar "bailouts" of this so-called capitalism – the most recent happening at the moment which represents a continuation of the 2007-2009 bailout which has never really ceased.  It has only continued surreptitiously under the auspicious of the Fed since 2009.

The problem in thinking about this is that we really aren't talking about capitalism when discussing the system of economic domination now operating in much of the developed world today.  What we are really talking about is a perverted form known as neoliberalism which has nothing whatsoever to do with the kinds of competition one normally associates with capitalism.  This is not to say that there is no competition or capitalism operating in the U.S. or the larger world.  It's just that it only functions at the local level among non-globalized businesses which have not been financialized – such as businesses which have been taken over by private equity vultures.

Capitalism by its very nature presumes a competitive environment in which failure is a real and present possibility and, in which, there can be no organization which is "too big to fail".  Neoliberalism is a political ideology premised on the idea that government exists to serve the needs of corporate interests; that there is no such thing as society; that social-Darwinism is the principle basis for human relationships; and that the most important tie-that-binds is the legal contract.  In this world politicians must be groomed and well-paid (as they are) to serve the needs of their corporate masters as they unfailingly continue to do even in the throes of a pandemic.

I raise this because the debate between capitalism and socialism is misplaced as long as we are dealing with the current economic system in much of the world today.  I. for one, do not know if it is possible to have a purely functional socialistic economic and political system or if it would have to be some form of a mixed one – partially socialist and partially capitalist.  I do doubt that we can have a successful purely capitalist system because capital will always work to attain monopoly and quash competition.  What I do know is that as long as we are struggling within the horrors and destructive inequalities wrought on the world by neoliberalism.  The first concern must be the overthrow of our neoliberal masters and their political enablers if anything good is likely to emerge.  Only then can we have a real and honest debate about capitalism vs. socialism.

  John

The propaganda system allows the U.S. Leadership to commit crimes without limit

and with no suggestion of misbehavior or criminality; in fact, major war criminals like

Henry Kissinger appear regularly on TV to comment on the crimes of the derivative butchers.

2020 Call for Speed Session Proposals

Mark,

We are now accepting Speed Session proposals for the 2020 NRPA Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida. Speed Sessions are quick, 20-minute presentations designed to engage and inspire. These collaborative and energizing sessions cover a variety of the hottest topics and trends in parks and recreation, and are always a popular attraction for attendees at the NRPA Annual Conference.

Here are three reasons you should submit a proposal this year:
  1. These sessions are a great opportunity to share your knowledge and unique experiences with park and recreation professionals from around the country.

  2. The sessions are only 20 minutes. No matter your speaking experience, this is a great opportunity to challenge yourself to think creatively and outside of the box for your presentation (audience participation is strongly encouraged).

  3. Submitting a proposal is easy! All you need is a great idea or story, a catchy title, a short description (100-200 words) and a learning outcome.
Submit Your Speed Session

The deadline to submit your proposal is April 30, 2020.
