Working with Citiparks on Summer Dreamers, or not

9/17/09
to Duane

To Director of Citiparks:

Hi Director,

I saw that Mike R. was in the court room. Eeeks. Hope you all are not
snowed under too too bad.

I'd love to strike up a conversation with you about the Pgh Public
Schools RFP for summer 2010 enrichment.

The deadline for those RFPs / proposals is Oct 2. And, there is still
a good deal of red tape for me to navigate.

I'd like to see if it is possible to get some cooperation in the grant
/ proposal requests.

For instance, for the 5 weeks of the camp, July 12 to Aug 13, 2010,
we'd love to have a group of up to 25 kids use the Schenley Ice Rink
building as a possible classroom -- mainly in case of rain, from the
hours of 12:30 to 3:30. They would also run at the track and use the
park.

By all means, there are funds to pay for this but they have to be in
the budget. Federal stimulus funds are being spent.

I'd also like to see if we could deploy in our plans:

-- Bike Oval at Highland Park / Washington Road
-- Swim pool visits with a Lifeguard camp
-- Sports movies in an outdoor setting -- perhaps at a school / i.e.,
Movies in the parks
-- Market House for some special events
-- Sand volleyball courts at Highland Park Pool

Mark...I already have staff pulling together a proposal of sorts based
on our past involvement with the School District.  However, a two
pronged approached might not be a bad idea........However, I sincerely
think that they already know who they will fund...and it won't be us.

Hi,

I do not know what proposals and providers the PPS will fund and who
they will not fund????  But, it seems to me that PPS is just new to
this range of activities and are grabbing for a lot at first blush --
up to 2,500 kids or so. Wow. That's huge. If that is the case, then
they'll need everyone's help.

If possible, I'd love to meet with Citiparks staffers who are working
on the PPS summer 2010 enrichment opportunities / RFP. Who is pulling
this together for you?

Furthermore, I know that the main new employees of the PPS had a
meeting with the folks at Phillips Elem as to what they've done in
cooperation with Citiparks in the past years. There is a great success
story with Citiparks and PPS at Phillips with Mr. Netchi the principal
there and your staffers. Well done. That is a large part of the model.

But, my questions still remain about me organizing a camp experience
and trying to deploy some Citiparks spaces for the activities.

Letter of recommendation for Mark Rauterkus from Deer Lakes Aquatic Club

Deer Lakes Aquatic Club
PO BOX 914 4 RUSSELLTON, PA 15076

March 24, 2008

To Whom It May Concern:

As members of the board of the Deer Lakes Aquatic Club, we are pleased to highly
recommend Mark Rauterkus to your organization. Our competitive swimming club was
formed in 1999, is a member of Allegheny Mountain Swimming, and takes pride in
promoting fitness, self-motivation and sportsmanship in our competitive swimmers.

Mark has been involved in the sport of swimming for over 30 years. Recently, when we
found ourselves without a head coach Mark, upon hearing of our predicament,
enthusiastically offered to step in and help with our competitive swimming program for
the remainder of our season. He jumped in with both feet to assist our club, and over
the last several weeks has imparted upon our swimmers his enthusiasm and dedication
to this sport. He is professional and reliable, and is well — liked by our swimmers and
parents alike. We are confident in his abilities and know that he would be a great asset
and bring tremendous leadership to any endeavor he pursues.

Sincerely,
Club Leadership

Letter from school

This came, and when it did, I didn't tell anyone. And, I don't think we changed any behaviors. There was nothing to bark at. Same old, same old.

Would you hire this man? Please? (Pittsburgh City Paper)

Would you hire this man?
Please?
Re “A Case of the Runs” [Potter, April 15] :
When one can’t move an agenda, it is time
to resign. Tom,Murphy needs to not only
not run, but he needs to step aside, now.
Pittsburgh hired Tom Murphy to be a
steward and operate our programs, places
and public services. When he chooses to not
do his job by closing swim pools, rec centers
and such, Murphy is choosing to get in
the way. His abandonment of stewardship
means he must go now.
However, the real wild card is the corporate
community. One top executive at
PNC, Mellon, Federated or even
FreeMarkets should do the right thing: Go
to Tom Murphy and offer him a corner
office, secretary, parking spot, hefty salary,
long-term contract, travel budget and some
nifty job title. And the deal might need
shorter gigs for Tom Cox and a few others
[in the Murphy administration] . Murphy
needs to be yanked off of Grant Street
before the tar and feathers arrive. And the
yanking must stem from some in the
Allegheny Conference circle. It might take
$200,000 per year for a decade.
Upon Murphy’s departure, I’ll be the
first to float a petition to rename both the
Liberty Bridge and Liberty Tunnel after
him. Motivating a move takes more carrot
and sticks to sway his ego.

Reporting a robbery in progress. AMS did not act.

September 3, 1999
Hi Cindy and Rick,

Here is a friendly heads up and notice. I got your email off of the AMS web pages. This note is being snail mailed to the club's address as well, PO Box 97952, 15227.

The TRA team exists. You should know this. We are aware that some former TRA members might be saying some un-flatternig things about the team's state. Some of TRA's former members might be engaged with your club. Your club might now be home to some swimmers who's parents are the focus of this investigation.

We do not have any problems with the children, but we do have problems with former board members and their duties of stewardship of a non-profit community organization. Furthermore, problems such as these should not be repeated elsewhere, hence the awareness, prevetion, and education.

The TRA team is now pressing matters in a number of different fronts against the miss-use of funds and authorty. Our legal folks are preparing letters to these individuals (not yourself of course) for delivery in September. And, our case is going to be delivered to the AMS executive committee and HOD some time soon as well. With the US Aquatics Convention and Coaching Clinics and such, we can not promise exact dates.

If you want to email me and set up a time when we might be able to meet and discuss this further, please do so.

Thanks for all you do in swimming and sports!
