My Quora Answer to a sports question:

How do you explain why people like sports to someone who doesn't like sports?

Sports are games. The games have rules. The realm of these rules and game play makes an alternative reality. This is pretend importance and escape from life. This is high drama of meaningless outcome. Entering the bubble of sports is fun.

Sport is unscripted too. Outcomes are uncertain. Think mystery. Who wins and who is the goat is for all to see. Sport often delivers new terms and jargon. The language gets twisted in sports with new meanings and pretend signals with superstition and superstar play. GOAT, for instance, means GREATEST OF ALL TIME.

Sports put humans at their very best in my opinion. We go higher, faster, longer in quests for greatness. Be the strongest and be a better self every week, every day, hour and minute growing a passion of excellence.

There are some take-home messages from sport for life. The lessons of sport can transcend into life. Sports should help, illustrate and encourage society and individuals to be better. Through sport and because of sport, rise up and be a better citizen, student, parent, professional.

If one does not like sports, well, fine. Different strokes for different folks. Try golf instead. Golf gets a pass into the world of sports because the thought of bashing small balls with such great force and accuracy is to scary to imagine out of the context of sports.

This is not an April Fools Joke, but it is extremely dangerous to our democracy

Gladfly talks about how to oppose without becoming a monster

Another blogger, "Gladfly" wrote something that is a bit odd with this statement:

If we tolerate the intolerant, if we give them equal time to offer their point of view and don’t aggressively counter their views, they will inevitably resort to violence and wipe our side out.

The KEY, IMHO, is the "EQUAL TIME" part. Of course, EQUAL TIME has at its root an AGGRESSIVE COUNTER.

There is a lot of value to EQUAL TIME. If equal time was much more prevalent, then we'd have less troubles. It is much like an escape value.

So, when the race for the US Congress #D18, had closed debates with only Saccone and Lame, the R and the D, but did not include the L -- BIG PROBLEMS. The hope of equal time vanished. The media freeze out of the third party means that the 1-on-1 race can get overly negative.

Furthermore, the folks on the fringe see that the democratic process is hopeless.They don't vote.They further depart normal society. They have grounds to be unto themselves, festering -- and that can easily lead to violence.

Screw you WTAE, KDKA, WESA. The PG too. What they did is not at all close to equal time. Even CNN didn't put the 3rd party candidate's name and vote total on the screen in its election night coverage until that vote total was 2x the margin between the D and R. #FAIL.

The Final Post - Sports Town will cease operations in October, 2017

Below is a message from Sports Town Editor Ken Wunderley.

In 2010, Tri-State Sports & News Service and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette teamed up to form the Sports Town web site. Sports Town provided excellent coverage of all high school sports for 6 1/2 years.

We were fortunate to have McDonald's as our sponsor during a six-year run, but the corporation has decided to end its sponsorship.

After an unsuccessful three-month search for a new sponsor, the Sports Town web site will cease operations in the near future.

The web site will be shut down at the end of October, so feel free to go back and find any posts or photos that you would like to save.

I would like to thank all the writers and photographers who contributed to Sports Town, especially writer Brad Everett (my right-hand man) and photographer Marilyn Schwilm. The full list of writers and photographers who have contributed over the years are listed below.

I also would like to thank McDonald's, for its six years of sponsorship, along with the many high school coaches, athletes, and fans who visited our site. Your support is greatly appreciated.

And lastly, I would like to thank Post-Gazette Executive Editor David Shribman, for giving me the opportunity to head up Sports Town, and Post-Gazette Assistant Managing Editor Matt Kennedy, for all his help with creating the web site and overseeing its operations.

Here's another example of just how nefarious and persistent neoliberalism is in attempting to distort reality in order to usher in policies intended to support corporate as opposed to individual or worker interests.  But, as the second article implies, neoliberal policies almost always lead to outcomes in which economies collapse and corporate malfeasance is rewarded while individuals are harmed and left unprotected by government.  The second article should also serve as a warning to anyone expecting their personal retirement accounts to continue to grow.  In these situations debt is a killer.
