Call for Workshop Proposals
Deadline for Submission:
Wednesday, April 15, 2020
Greetings Mark:
First, we at the National Summer Learning Association (NSLA) would like to acknowledge that this is a unique and unprecedented time across the world, and dynamics and circumstances are rapidly changing day by day. We are in contact with partners and allies daily in our field around strategies to support schools, families and students. We will continue to stay in touch in the coming days and weeks with important news and resources. Please feel free to reach out to us with updates, suggestions, questions or needs you have as well.

Now more than ever, America will be looking to summer learning programs and leaders for solutions to support the growth and education of our young people. We are all innovating and adjusting to new circumstances to carry on our work. Providing a space to share and learn, and building a network of support for our legion of out of school time leaders will be critical as we move towards strengthening and sustaining our field and programs.

Our annual national conference Summer Changes Everything™ is such a space. It will be held in Washington, DC, November 16-18, 2020 at the historic Mayflower Hotel. We are opening our call for session proposals. NSLA seeks creative, relevant and dynamic proposals for conference sessions that will enable the growing field of out-of-school time professionals to share what they have done and learned during these recent experiences and to build, strengthen, and expand life-changing summer opportunities for all young people.

The workshop sessions will advance evidence-based practices, effective partnership strategies, and leadership development at every level, as well as examine learning trends and policy implications that will have a direct impact on your work.

The deadline for proposal submissions is Wednesday, April 15, 2020.
All NSLA workshops will fall into one of the following content strands:

  • Program Quality - Engage participants in developing quality at the program level by providing concrete tools supported by research and/or specific examples from the field.
  • Policy, Research & Advocacy - Highlight trends and achievements in summer learning research, policy, and advocacy at the local, state, and national levels.
  • Partnerships and Community System Building - Offer practical tips and highlight research on how community-wide education systems, with a focus on out-of-school time, can lead to more youth served, high quality programs, and positive outcomes at scale.
  • Leadership, Equity and Organizational Management Share lessons and resources on being an effective and inclusive leader, managing staff, fundraising operations, marketing and organizational challenges.

Instructions for Submitting a Presenter Proposal

  • All proposals are to be submitted using the online form.
  • The online proposal form can be saved after you have begun working. Be sure to save your log-in credentials so you can sign back in to update, make changes, and submit additional proposals
  • If you have any problems or questions, please contact NSLA conference team at NSLAconference@summerlearning.org for assistance.

This year, Summer Changes Everything™ is in Washington, DC and we want you to stay in the know about registrations dates, travel accommodations, featured speakers, workshop offerings, and more.

Learn More

6-8 Game Viewing & Scoring Practice.

We have created a new 4- day per week program that allows athletes to watch high quality water polo game footage on our 6-8 YouTube channel and use the game scoring feature on the 6-8 app to track a specific athlete in the game.

The program will officially begin this Wednesday, March 24. Follow our @68sports Instagram for updates!

Here's how it works:

  • on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, follow our @68sports Instagram stories to find out the link for that day's game footage (we will choose one quarter of a college or professional game and it will be uploaded to our 6-8 YouTube channel)

  • login to your account on the 6-8 Sports mobile app and click on "Game Scoring"

  • create a new game by clicking on the little + sign in the lower right hand corner

  • our Instagram stories will let you know what to name each game, what to name each team and also which specific athlete you will be tracking that day

  • start watching the game footage on YouTube and score the specific athlete on your 6-8 app

  • take a screenshot of your final game stats page and tag us on @68sports Instagram— each week we will have a raffle between all those that submitted the correct stats and one person will win a special 6-8 prize!

The benefits of this exercise:

  • stay in the water polo mindset

  • focus on a player and see how much you can learn about their moves and abilities

  • put yourself into the game by understanding rules and situations

  • ask questions like "what did I miss and why?"

  • as a kid, Tony's Dad always told him to watch a certain player and not just a game — this helped Tony to develop role models and learn new skills

Virtual Group Training Sessions.

We are also going to start offering Virtual Training sessions through Zoom with Tony and Ricardo Azevedo.

For this week (March 23 - 27) we will be running test sessions featuring Tony or Ricardo Azevedo at 10 am starting on Tuesday, March 24. All sessions are FREE and will be limited to the first 20 athletes that register.

To book your spot and receive your Zoom login information, please send an email to sara@azevedowaterpolo.com.

Starting next week, sessions will be scheduled for Monday through Friday at 10 am and will be 30 minutes in length.

Each session will be different and will include topics such as:

  • specific water polo theme
  • video breakdown
  • tactical and technical explanations
  • mental training and motivational focus

Stay tuned for more updates coming soon!

Private Virtual Training & Coaching with Tony

As a supplement to our group virtual training sessions, Tony will be offering a select number of private online classes. Sessions are 30 minutes in length, will be held over Zoom and can be scheduled at your convenience. YOU can decide what you would like to focus on or Tony can create a custom program. Subjects can include:

  • goal setting and individual mentoring
  • personal video breakdown and analysis
  • have Tony design your own custom "At Home" workout plan
  • get any and all questions answered

Take advantage of this unique moment in your career to focus on the little things that might have been ignored before. Emerge from this crisis smarter, more fit and better prepared than ever before!

$95 per session

Please email sara@azevedowaterpolo.com to reserve your session.

Let us know how we can help.

This is an unprecedented moment in our world, and we are doing our best to find ways to keep young athletes motivated, fit and inspired. Please send us your ideas, comments or feedback because ultimately we are here to serve YOU.

Fwd: An Update From FreeConferenceCall.com

Hi Everyone,

We wanted to provide an update. Millions of people around the world are hitting phone carrier systems and the internet at levels never before seen. This has resulted in some people experiencing busy signals whether calling in to a conference line or just trying to call friends and family. If you would like to help alleviate some of the strain here are some things you can do:

  • Download The Mobile App. Tap here to Download for iPhone, here to Download for Android. This will give you the ability to call in over WiFi. Our app also has smart call routing so when you dial-in using your phone we'll route you to carrier networks that have the most bandwidth.

  • Download The Desktop App. This lets you call in using your computer and also lets you stay better connected with screensharing and video conferencing. Tap the following link and scroll down to Download the Desktop App

  • Schedule meetings to start 15 or 45 minutes past the hour rather than on the hour. Carrier networks are less congested at these times. If you could please post this final tip out to your social networks it would be a huge help. Please use the hashtag #15or45. This will help not just us and our fellow conferencing companies but everyone in the United States who is trying to use phone networks.

We can't say it enough, thank you to all of you. You are the best community in the world.

Please stay safe, stay connected, and let us know how we can help.

Thank you,

Dave

URA Offering Resources to Help Small Businesses Potentially Impacted by Coronavirus

PITTSBURGH, PA (March 13, 2020) – The Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh (URA) today announced that it has resources available for its small business borrowers, as well as small businesses located in the City of Pittsburgh, potentially impacted by the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

"The URA recognizes the potential hardships and needs small businesses are facing and may face due to COVID-19. We want to reassure our small business borrowers that we are here to work with you. If you have a loan from the URA and need to seek relief, please contact us - we are here to help," said Tom Link, the URA's director of the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

"For the small business community at large, please be aware of these community resources listed below that are available to you. We will keep communication lines open as to any resources we are aware of that can help you."

Assistance for small businesses in the City of Pittsburgh:

  • URA small business borrowers should contact their URA loan officer via email or phone.

  • Small businesses that are not URA borrowers can reference the U.S. Small Business Administration Guide to plan and respond to COVID-19 at this link.

In addition, the Hebrew Free Loan Association of Pittsburgh has announced a Coronavirus Financial Bridge Loan Program to provide interest-free loans on a nonsectarian basis for up to $5,000 to residents of Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Westmoreland, Washington, and Armstrong counties who are facing financial challenges caused by COVID-19.

The United Way operates a free helpline called 2-1-1 for housing and other emergencies.

"The URA continues to work with its government partners to create more opportunities to help businesses in this time of need. We will release more updates as necessary," said Link.

Fwd: Your FreeConferenceCall.com Account

Hi Everyone,

I hope this email finds you well. 18 years ago I launched FreeConferenceCall.com so that everyone in the world would have access to free communications. Never before has that mission felt more important.

Over the last couple days, hundreds of thousands of people across the world have turned to FreeConferenceCall.com. We are working around the clock to be there for everyone in our incredible community.

Today I wanted to answer some of the most common questions we've been getting.

By Far The Most Common Question: Is This Service Really Free?

Yes. We have been completely free for over 18 years. We're able to do this because we are fortunate to have the best community in the world. Many of you have chosen to pay us what you think is fair for our service. Others have chosen to purchase upgrades like One Number. In some markets we participate in carrier economics. All of this helps us offer free communications to people all around the world.

If you are interested in learning more about this log into your account or watch the video below that covers how our incredible community helps keep FreeConferenceCall.com free.

What Can I Do To Help?

There are more people than ever online and hitting phone networks around the world. Most congestion occurs on the hour and 30 minutes past the hour (this is when most companies are scheduling meetings). To help our phone carrier partners try scheduling your meetings to start at 5, 15, or 45 minutes past the hour. For example, starting your meeting at 10:05 rather than 10. This will greatly help all of our network partners.

Speaking Of Network Partners…

I'm getting tons of questions about AT&T. I can't believe this is still the case, but AT&T is still trying to block calls. It's unconscionable to me at this time that a company would make that choice. Please rest assured we have been and continue to build workarounds.

If you find yourself impacted, simply text your conference's dial-in number. We will then text you back an alternate, back up number that will circumvent these issues.

If you have any other questions, we have a world-class, award winning customer service team that is standing by to help. You can also check out our support center here: https://www.freeconferencecall.com/support

This is a time unlike any seen previously in the modern era. We are so thankful that we are able to be there to be of help, and our appreciation to all of you in our FreeConferenceCall.com community cannot be overstated.

From all of us here please stay safe, let us know how we can help, and thank you.

Dave.
