Greetings,

Pittsburgh Public Schools has an urgency to think differently about how it delivers a 21st Century education to all students – especially during a time when revenues are flat and expenditures are increasing. The District faces the challenge of closing a $50MM budget shortfall while ensuring that the structures are in place to support its vision that 80% of Pittsburgh Public Schools students earn a post-secondary degree or workforce certification. In January 2013, the District embarked on a large scale visioning process called Envisioning Education Excellence: A Plan for All of Pittsburgh's Students to address the current state challenges and future goals of the District. Continued engagement of students, teachers, principals, funders, and the broader community is critical to the success of this project.

In an effort to incorporate the community's feedback on Pittsburgh Public Schools into the Envisioning work, we'd like for you to take this short survey. It should take ~10 minutes to complete and your responses will remain anonymous. Your input will be used internally to assist in future decision making and evaluate proposed actions for the District.

You can find the link to the survey here: Pittsburgh Public Schools Online Survey. It will be open until Friday, May 31st.

Please forward this message along to your networks so that others can take the survey. If you want to learn more about the work we are doing, please visit our website: Envisioning Educational Excellence. You may also feel free to email envisioning@pghboe.net with any questions.

Kind regards,

The Pittsburgh Public Schools "Envisioning Excellence" Team

Learn Where the Candidates Stand On Our Issues Before You Vote

candidates-mayor

Biking and walking are political issues.

When you choose to get around by foot or by bike, you are addressing critically important issues: personal health, air quality, oil dependence, economics, infrastructure, and safety.

Making the choice easy and safe for people to use a bicycle or to walk for basic transportation is often up to our elected officials and their commitment to dedicate the financial resources needed to make our streets safe for everyone whether they are 8 years old or 80. This is why, since 2007, we have been conducting a Q&A for our prospective leaders during their election campaigns.

Before heading to the polls, please take a moment and learn what each candidate will do to make Pittsburgh better for biking and walking.

Thank you for participating in the We Walk. We Bike. We Vote. campaign. Because of you our issues were front and center this election.

Regards,

Scott Bricker
BikePGH Executive Director

Dear Friends and Family,

I'm counting the days 'til June 1st, the release date for "My House Our House: Living Far Better for Far Less in a Cooperative Household," St. Lynn's Press. "MHOH" 2013 is the new, improved and expanded edition of the book I co-authored with housemates Karen M. Bush and Jean McQuillin. It is available in bookstores and online.

The three of us are loving what the AARP gurus call our "encore career." It's a wild but energizing ride, scrambling to master the basics of writing, public speaking and marketing while keeping those day jobs all at the same time. (Whew! Social media is a challenge for Boomers.)

Karen, Jean and I were proud to be appointed to the Advisory Board of the Cohouseholding Project (Cohouseholding.org), and to be featured in an upcoming June 2013 AARP Bulletin article by Sally Abrahms and on the AARP multimedia site. Fingers crossed that the pix are not embarrassing.

Please invite your friends to join us online; i.e., spread the word!

 Facebook.com/MyHouseOurHouse, Website: www. myhousehourhouse.comTwitter: @myhouseourhouse

Best wishes from my/our house to your house,

Louise

P.S. Feels like I just wrote my Christmas letter in May.

Endorsements for "MHOH":

"My House Our House is a smart guide to an innovative shared living arrangement that can save money and resources. Written with charm and wit, it is essential reading for anyone who lives alone but dreams of a better lifestyle in community. As the Age Wave crests, these leading edge Boomers have created a joyful new beginning."--- Ken Dychtwald, Ph.D., Author of A New Purpose: Redefining Money, Family, Work, Retirement and Success

"This wonderful book by three unrelated women and a cat shares their personal story of purchasing and sharing a house in Pittsburgh, PA. In addition to their story, they provide how-to information and useful insights to help others purchase and embrace a shared life. Its a MUST for mature adults interested in responsibly facing the third phase of their lives."  Oz Ragland, retired Executive Director of the Cohousing Association and instigator of the Cohouseholding Project (cohouseholding.com)

ELECTION INFORMATION

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: The Black Political Empowerment Project(B-PEP)

One of B-PEP's primary missions is that "It's a LIFETIME commitment...African Americans VOTE in EACH and EVERY election".  To encourage participation in meeting this important mission B-PEP provides the following information:

The May 21, 2013 primary is just a few days away. Are you ready to vote?

Reasons to Vote If You Live Allegheny County:

1.    You want honest and well-run elections. This starts by choosing the people who work at your polling place. Elections for Judge of Election and Election Inspector are on the May 21 ballot.

2.    You can send a signal to politicians that you will be paying close attention to what they say and do.Elected officials understand that the people who vote them into office can be expected to go to the polls to vote them out of office if they don't live up to the voters' expectations.

3.    You help ensure the election of qualified judges. Voters are especially in the dark about people running for judge. Learn as much as you can by reviewing the non-partisan endorsements for statewide judges by the Pennsylvania Bar Association and for judges of the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas and Municipal Court by the Allegheny County Bar Association.

4.    You can set a good example for what it means to be a responsible citizen for your kids and grandkids. It may be harder to get yourself to the polls when there isn't a president, governor or mayor or City Council headlining the ballot. But studies show that kids whose parents vote are more likely to vote themselves.Five Things to Know If You Vote In Pennsylvania:

1.    You don't need a photo ID to vote.  However, first-time voters or voters voting for the first time in a new division must show either a photo or non-photo ID to use the voting machines. If you don't have one, you can only vote by provisional (paper) ballot. See a list of acceptable forms of identification here

2.    You should call 1-866-OUR-VOTE (1-866-687-8683) if you have any questions about voting or experience problems at the polls.  Trained non-partisan volunteers at the Committee of Seventy will be taking your calls and can provide the help you need.

3.    You can only vote if you are a registered Republican or Democrat and only then for candidates in your own party.  Pennsylvania has a "closed" primary system, which means that primary elections are only open to members of the Democratic or Republican parties to nominate candidates for the general election. Independent or minority party voters can only vote on ballot questions in primary elections. There are no questions on the May 21 ballot in Philadelphia.

4.    You are too late to vote by absentee ballot but are eligible to vote by emergency absentee ballot if you learned after May 14 that you'll be out of town on May 21 or if you've become physically ill or disabled since the deadline. Pennsylvania provides a safety net for voters who have last minute emergencies that will prevent them from voting on May 21The application for an emergency absentee ballot and more details on the process are available at www.votespa.com.

5.    You should find out before going to the polls if you are registered to vote.  The place where you vote can change from one election to the next. Before you vote on May 21, check to make sure you are going to the right location by going to www.votespa.com. Or you can call 1-866-OUR-VOTE (1-866-687-8683.)
