TeenBloc Rally for Bill of Rights
Now accepting TeenBloc  Nominations

Dear Friends,

Students are the reason we do our work. And it's our students at TeenBloc who are leading the way on reforms like the Student Bill of Rights and Restorative Practices in our schools.

Do you know a high school student in Pittsburgh schools who has the potential to be a leader, to be an advocate, to be part of a great team?

TeenBloc is fighting for social justice and equity in our schools by raising student voice through training, advocacy and organizing.

With the help of strong youth development staff Pamela Little-Poole and Sarah Brown, students will focus on all aspects of advocacy from cutting an issue to organizing others around a call to action to working with key decision makers.

Thank you,

Carey

Deborah DiamondBy Carol Coletta

Attracting and retaining talent is at the top of the economic development agenda in many U.S. cities. And the organization that probably knows best how to do that is Campus Philly.

Deborah Diamond is president of Campus Philly, and she joined us this week to talk about what the organization has learned. Here are five things you should know from our conversation:

1.        The mission of Campus Philly is to connect students to Philadelphia in a way that matters to them.

2.        Young adults have twin needs. They need career opportunities and they need to love where they live.

3.        Students don't know what jobs are available. Campus Philly Crawls and Meet Your Industry events get students into workplaces to hear from leaders and gain insight into the city's industries.

4.        College Fest, another Campus Philly-produced event, brings together 5,000-plus college students for a combination festival and day of exploring the city. When students see all of the other college students, they realize they are in a college town. And when they make connections with each other, they build connections to Philadelphia because that's what they all have in common.

5.        Open Arts is a way to give free access to students to arts and culture. But students want more than free access. They want to see other students, and they want to participate in the arts, not simply observe as part of an audience.

Listen to my conversation with Deborah here. And sign up for the "Knight Cities" newsletter to get alerts as soon as new conversations are posted.

Look for new "Knight Cities" content posted every week. You can follow us on Twitter at #knightcities or @knightfdn. And if you have ideas for people you'd like to hear from, please email me.

Hi Martin,

We're excited to introduce the new Thimble
<https://sendto.mozilla.org/page/m/29b5e0d9/6aa3ec55/15a497e4/5c5545f6/3319291220/VEsF/>,
an even more powerful way to teach and learn the Web. With this upgraded
tool, teaching HTML, CSS and other coding languages becomes simple and
hands-on. Whether learners want to remix existing content or build a web
page from scratch, Thimble can help.

Mozilla initially developed Thimble as a code editor for educators and
learners of all skill levels. Now, Thimble has evolved into a curriculum
aid and so much more. Updates to Thimble include:

   - *Expanded capabilities*. Users can now build and link multiple web
pages, rather than just one, within a single project.
   - *A helping hand*. A more guided learning experience featuring
easy-to-use tutorials, auto-closing tags and autocomplete.
   - *So much more*. A sleeker look and feel, auto-save extensions, a
   selfie-taker and other new features.

We're eager to see how you use Thimble

both inside and outside the classroom. Let us know how you're teaching
others to read, write and participate on the Web. And reach out to us
anytime @MozTeach or teachtheweb@mozillafoundation.org.

2 Political Junkies should think about doing a Kickstarter and getting a couple of these publications

The Pittsburgh Tribune Review seems to be downsizing some of its remote publications with sales looming, as reported in its own pages.

http://triblive.com/business/headlines/8994304-74/trib-media-total#axzz3k9SAfE4v

Perhaps Dave, a blogger at 2 Political Junkies, should do a crowd source campaign and buy one or two of these papers. Dave just loves to read the various opinions found in the pages of the Trib, especially by editorial pundits, and lampoon them for less than truthful statements and conclusions.

TIME TO REGISTER

The start of a new school year is a great time to have student-athletes register with the NCAA Eligibility Center.

Who Should Register?  Any current high school sophomore, junior or senior who wishes to participate in collegiate athletics at an NCAA Division I or II college or university should register.

How Does Registration Work?  Registrants may access the site at eligibilitycenter.org.  From the home page, click on "Enter Here" for NCAA college-bound student-athletes, then on the "New Account" link in the upper right corner.  From there, they simply follow the prompts.

UPDATED RESOURCES

A brand new Guide for High School Counselors is available for download. This Guide has been designed to help high school administrators understand the NCAA initial-eligibility process and to prepare them to help college-bound student-athletes to transition from high school to becoming an NCAA Division I or II student-athlete.
