Fwd: What we ignore . . . at our peril

------- Forwarded message ---------
From: John H

With all the yammering about Russian interference with our democracy, why is it that we keep asserting that Israel is a democracy at all.  Our so-called democracy is manipulated and controlled by the American oligarchs, while Israel's is controlled by neo-fascists under Netanyahu – so where is the democracy.  And with the establishment media covering nothing but Trump and his fondness for Putin and the young women with whom he has had affairs, what ever happened to the main concern of our age – global climate change.  If nothing else, our priorities have become a laughable farce.

Fwd: Let me introduce myself: Head Coach OHIO University Swimming and Diving

I graduated from Ohio University. For four years, I was also the assistant coach for the Men's Swimming and Diving program -- a team that does not exist any longer.

In many ways, Ohio University is dead to me. My sons did not consider Ohio University because the opportunities I had in the late 70s and early 80s are no longer afforded to the young men of these recent generations.

Women's swimming was a thing at Ohio University when I was there as well.

Mark,

This introduction is a long time coming. Let me start by introducing myself. My name is Mason Norman and I am the new head coach of the womens swimming and diving TEAM at OHIO University. It is a pleasure to be welcomed to such a storied program and athletic department. I am delighted to become part of the legacy that the swimming and diving program has created spanning many decades.
I am arriving to Athens by way of the University of Kentucky where I spent the last five years as an assistant coach and associate head coach for the last year. My wife, Samantha, and I have one daughter, Emorie, who will be two in September. We both swam in college together at Wingate University in North Carolina where we met while in school.
My coaching philosophy focuses on the whole person of each student-athlete. My goal as a coach is to teach and demand growth in four areas of life as a college student athlete at OHIO: academic life, athletic life, social life, and spiritual life. If the members of this TEAM have grown in each of these areas during their time with the OHIO swimming and diving FAMILY, we have done our job.
The environment of the program is going to be one saturated with positive energy. Positive energy breeds love, love breeds success.
The communication among the staff and the TEAM will always be open and honest, just like a FAMILY.
Every single day we will have a put your hand on the wall first mentality as we raise the expectations and build a championship culture.
The program will always have a caring, players first culture, providing the student-athlete with what they need to have the best experience possible at OHIO.
As a TEAM, we will be disciplined, respectful, and give back through selfless service throughout each year.
I am excited to begin this amazing adventure at OHIO and look forward to all the experiences that I will have! I look forward to meeting each one of you personally if I am able.  My door is always open. Please feel free to contact me directly. I have provided my cell phone number and email below.
As this program moves forward, please understand there will be many changes, but there are many traditions that I would like to keep that make this program unique. We will begin to connect with the alumni group through this email service. I would love for each one of you to follow the program and social media accounts for the team and staff to gain more access into our story as a program.
GO BOBCATS!

Fwd: Something useful for a change

------ Forwarded message ---------
From: John H

This is a really interesting short article with a long list of following comments (it is altogether long – 22 pages).  Fortunately it can be read piecemeal but  it is something that many of us should find to be useful.  Many of the comments are particularly relevant to the current conversational/ argumentative milieu.  I strongly encourage you to take a look, regardless of where you fall on the political spectrum.

John

Article: Reader Coping Strategies for Engaging with Committed.

The article byYves Smith begins:

An oft-repeated bit of advice in America is never to talk about religion or politics. Sadly, the
reason is that Americans are dreadful at talking across political lines. When I lived in Australia
in the early 2000s and adopted a pub, by contrast, I found the locals to be eager to debate the
topics of the day yet remain civil about it. That may be because Australians in generally have
mastered the art of being confrontational by lacing it with humor and/or self-deprecation.

By contrast, Americans, who pretend to fetishize individualism, are conformists. Dissent is not
well tolerated at work or social spheres. And its only gotten worse as media fragmentation and
political strategies based on hitting voter hot buttons means that many people are deeply invested
in their political views, whether they are well founded or not. Punitive unfriending and other
forms of ostracism have become a new normal.

Fwd: Elizabeth's Story

Elizabeth stepped up to the sink, with a sense of anticipation and slowly turned on the water. She let it run for about 5 seconds and turned it off. She then turned it on again and broke into tears. When a volunteer tried to comfort her she explained, "These are tears of joy, I prayed for two years that someone would help me and now you are here!" She was thrilled that she would no longer need to collect water in a 5 gallon bucket underneath her sink. She was thankful that these strangers would answer her call for help, and she was sure that she wasn't alone in the desire that her house would be the haven that she wanted to provide for the five grandchildren that she was raising. (See more of Elizabeth's story here!)

This is the work of The Pittsburgh Project, we come alongside of vulnerable homeowners like Elizabeth and work to restore their dignity by investing in the repair of their homes. With your help this year, Elizabeth and more than 100 other homeowners like her will host teams of skilled laborers and volunteers from The Pittsburgh Project. Roofs will be rebuilt, floors installed, plumbing repaired and most importantly love and hope will be shared.

We are looking for 500 people who will support The Pittsburgh Project at the level of $1000 per year or $83.00 per month. (Any size gift is welcome.) Your partnership with us at this level ensures that we can continue to meet the needs of over 100 homeowners and also invest in the youth and families of the north side of Pittsburgh. The summer is our most busy work time, we have gone ahead and started the work and await your investment as the weeks ahead will bring many exciting new projects and also the great expense associated with this work.

Please follow the link below to partner with us!

Thanks and Blessings,

Wayne F. Younger, Executive Director, The Pittsburgh Project

Fwd: Why no protests . . . Why no concern?

-- Forwarded message ---------
From: John H

So why is it, Paul Street asks, that there are no massive turn-outs and protests by liberal Democrats where U.S. War Crimes are concerned.  Why are there no protests concerning our direct and indirect support for the bombing murder and starvation of perhaps millions in Yemen by our wonderful ally Saudi Arabia?  Why are we so sanguine about the slaughter of thousands by our steadfast so-called 'moderate' Islamic allies in Syria?  Why no outrage about our fifteen years + of devastating war in Afghanistan and Iraq?  Why is the Democratic Party so head-over-heels in love with the military/intelligence/corporate contracting conglomerates intent upon extending empire at any cost to American in treasure and non-white foreigners in lives and devastation?  Why no criticism of Israel's repeated slaughter and near starvation by policy of Palestinians?  Can someone please help me understand how so many 'good, concerned' liberals are seemingly OK with these outrages?  And why do I keep hearing that if we just had Democrats in charge things would be different?  They haven't been and more of the same will change little.  And can you explain how you can keep praising this country as a nation of peace and democracy?

Fwd: This Week in News for Senator Rand Paul - July 20, 2018

------ Forwarded message ---------
From: U.S. Senator Rand Paul

Dear Friend,

You can find out the latest about my week in Kentucky and on Capitol Hill below!
Dr. Rand Paul Visits Louisville
On Monday morning, I had the opportunity to spend time speaking with community members and business leaders in Louisville about our economy, the federal government's attacks on your Fourth Amendment rightswhat lies ahead on trade, and other pressing issues in Washington.  In addition to answering audience questions, I also spoke with local media outlets after the forum.
(Dr. Paul Speaks to Business and Community Leaders in Louisville - July 16, 2018)
Dr. Rand Paul: "Trump Is Right to Meet Putin"
With President Trump meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, I applauded his decision to keep the lines of communication open with Russia in my latest piece for Politico.
"Politicizing international affairs is a dangerous game," I observed, "but that hasn't stopped far too many in Washington, who seem to have forgotten that a vital part of keeping America safe and secure is avoiding war through strong and consistent diplomacy, from playing politics.  One way they do this is to insist we not meet with or speak openly to our adversaries on the world stage.
"I disagree," I continued.  "Dialogue is especially important when hundreds of millions of lives are at stake, as is the case in relations between the United States and nuclear-armed Russia."
I also pointed out that, historically, "both sides maintained constant dialogue and communications" - including while the Cold War was at its height and even during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
The hysteria of the past couple years has had an impact many have missed, with the hostile climate leading to "a vacuum in cultural, educational, and even legislative exchanges, while elected officials from both Washington and Moscow are now on so-called 'ban lists.'"  Ultimately, I believe that nothing will be achieved if each country closes the door on the other.
To be clear, I noted that "[o]f course, we don't have to make decisions based on whether they will or will not make Russia mad.  But we should at the very least recognize the impact of our actions before we take them."
We don't have to consider Russia our friend, I went on to say, but we do have common interests, such as Syria and combating terrorism, that require us to maintain an open dialogue.
You can read my entire op-ed HERE.
Dr. Rand Paul: Continuing to Work for Peace
I also talked about President Trump's trip and outreach in my latest video update this week, where I said that "Trump haters and hawks from both sides of the aisle were quick to denounce the president's actions, but I for one am glad he went."
"The world is too dangerous to threaten war over hacked emails," I continued, "and it is too dangerous to choose isolation when confronted with the challenges to our relations and to world peace."
I also strongly agreed with President Trump's statement that he "would rather take a political risk in pursuit of peace, than to risk peace in pursuit of politics."
You can watch my update video HERE.
Yesterday, I continued speaking out by objecting to an amendment offered by Senator Bernie Sanders (Vermont) that would have further broken down diplomatic communications with Russia.
In a short speech on the Senate floor, I responded to the effort by saying, "Trump Derangement Syndrome has officially come to the Senate.  The hatred for the president is so intense that partisans would rather risk war than give diplomacy a chance."
Nobody is excusing Russia's meddling in our elections, and we should stand firm and protect the integrity of our elections, but we must also maintain open channels of discussion.
You can watch my speech HERE.
(Dr. Paul Stands up for Diplomacy and Peace on the Senate Floor - July 19, 2018)
Dr. Rand Paul Asks Why U.S. Taxpayers Are Paying for Pakistani Kids to go to Space Camp and Dollywood
As I continue working to make sure the American people know what their government is doing with their money, I recently sat down with Sinclair Broadcast Group's Kristine Frazao to discuss the U.S. State Department spending $250,000 of taxpayer funds to send 24 Pakistani kids on a trip to the U.S. that included multiple days at Space Camp and stops at Dollywood and Washington, D.C.

"I think we have so many problems here at home that we need to address before we think about spending money on somebody else's kids," I pointed out in the interview.

You can learn more about this misuse of taxpayer funds HERE.

Media Wrap-Up
This week, I appeared on Fox News' Fox & Friends Weekend, Your World with Neil Cavuto, The Story with Martha MacCallum, America's Newsroom, and Tucker Carlson Tonight (you can find my appearance on Wednesday night HERE and Thursday night HERE); CNN's State of the Union with Jake Tapper and The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer; CBS' CBS This Morning; and PBS' PBS Newshour.
I also talked with outlets including the AP, Politico, and ABC News, and I spoke with radio hosts Tom Roten, Chad Young, Bill Cunningham, Chris Ryan, Laura Ingraham, and Sean Hannity.
