Pioneering: Why Do Grades Hold So Much Power Over Our Children's Futures?
Stories & Ideas Shaping the Future of Education

Dear Pioneers,

In partnership with ATTN: and 180 Studio, the fourth and final installment of our series exploring the "whys" of traditional education is live!

In this latest video and article, Dr. Ulcca Joshi Hansen explores the history of our traditional A-F grading system, which takes all the wonder of what a child has learned and discovered and presents it with a single letter or percentage.

Following this exposition, Dr. Joshi Hansen provides evidence for the deleterious effects the grading system and GPA's have on learners throughout their academic journeys. And, she proposes one of many ways to reimagine learning assessments and the potential these new models hold for both young people and adults.
Watch the fourth video in the Why Series: Why Grades?
Of course, traditional schooling is not the only place assessment systems like this exist. In companies and organizations around the world, standardized assessments are used to sort and rank employees. This begs the question, why are we so focused on comparing ourselves to some arbitrary average?

If you'd like to explore more on this topic, we highly recommend checking out the work of Todd Rose. His book, The End of Average, provides a strong case against the existence of an average human being. If such a person doesn't exist, why do we use it as a measuring stick?

Enjoy,
Education Reimagined

P.S. On Tuesday evening, we sent out the first issue of Pioneering Weekly. In it, we featured a story from Tessa Simonds, a learner from One Stone in Boise, ID. We made a mistake in saying she lived in Utah and apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

The fourth and final installment of the Why Series from @EdReimagined, @ATTN, and @thisis180 is live! Have you ever wondered why we use a single grade or percentage to measure "success"? What if we reimagined how we assess learning? What would we include? http://bit.ly/WhyGrades

Education Reimagined, in partnership with ATTN: and 180 Studio, just launched the final video in a four-part series exploring the "whys" of traditional education. This video explores why we use grades and GPA's to singularly determine the dynamic and complex nature of learning. What do you think? Should we reimagine how we assess learning? http://bit.ly/WhyGrades

New Principal Named

The Bishop Canevin Board of Directors announced recently that Michael Joyce has been selected as the new Principal of Bishop Canevin High School. Joyce will succeed Kenneth Sinagra who will retire on June 30, 2018, after serving in the role since 2002.

"Michael is a thoughtful, strategic leader committed to Catholic education and we are thrilled to have him join our Bishop Canevin community," said Mary Lou Gegick, board chair. "And, he will focus on implementing innovative programs to ensure that our students acquire the knowledge, skills and moral character they need for success."

For 11 years, Joyce has worked at Seton LaSalle High School. For the past four years, he was the school's Assistant Principal and previously served as Dean of Students, and as a member of the social studies department. Active in the school community Mr. Joyce also previously served in the role of assistant basketball, baseball, and soccer coach and as member of the school SAP team. In 2017, he received the coveted James A. Palmer Award given in recognition of Christian values, servant leadership, and love of students, and was a nominee for the Golden Apple Award in 2015.

"I look forward to helping Bishop Canevin continue to excel in offering our students a strong academic experience anchored in faith, with an emphasis on social justice, and excellent extra-curricular opportunities," said Michael Joyce, principal. "Catholic education is rooted in my family and I am excited to join a community with such a dedicated faculty, outstanding core values, strong tradition, and bright future."

Joyce earned a Bachelor's degree from the Pennsylvania State University in Secondary Education, a Master's in School Counseling from Duquesne University and a Principal's Certification from California University of Pennsylvania. A resident of Pleasant Hills, and member of Prince of Peace Parish in the South Side, Michael and his wife Stephanie, who serves as a teacher at St. Louise de Marillac Catholic Elementary School, have a two-year-old son, Benjamin.

With the advent of the hard-core and proudly neoliberal Keith Burris as managing editor of the Post-Gazette and the censorship of Rob Rogers editorial cartoons which depict Trump in a bad light, perhaps it's time we reconsider whether buying the paper is a priority in our lives.  The recent changes in the Post-Gazette's editorial policies are really difficult to swallow.  See the attached article, which indicates that it has even been noticed in New York City.

Hey Friends,

I'm sitting on a hill in Oneonta, New York enjoying the view and patting my friend's dogs. Good summer fun. So far this summer has been amazing. This leg of the tour started in Winston-Salem where I played a concert and did special music for their youth bridging. I met a lot of new friends, saw some SUUSI folks. It was great and motivating. Then I headed to Raleigh where I picked up Meg and we saw our friends, Nan and Sam who have retired to Durham. I celebrated my birthday with our oldest, Dr. Sam and his amazing wife Emily and our two grandkids, Piper and Hollis. Every Sunday between now and mid- September I get to sing or preach or both at different UU churches across the country. This is helping me pay for seminary. I made it through the first half and go back to class in August. I got a partial scholarship to Starr King for next year but the rest I have to raise myself. The big news is I will be performing at UU General Assembly in Kansas City during four services over the five days. I co-wrote the theme song for the entire conference with Rev. Kimberley Debus. The song is called, All are Called. I also get to sing my song Hold On at the closing worship. Cool huh? I love seminary so far and I am grateful for everyone's help and good wishes. I am working hard. I am very relieved that playing music and writing songs is so integral to my ministry. The People's Orchestra 's summer session starts July 1st.

I hope your summer is shaping up and I hope to see you at a concert or service near you.

Cheers,

Kiya
