International Swimming League
Dear Friends,

As you know, the biggest annual coaches' convention – the ASCA World Clinic will be held at Anaheim Marriott Hotel on September, 4-8.

We are pleased to inform you that this year's program includes the presentation of our special guests, the team of the International Swimming League (ISL) that for the first time will present an entirely new format of swimming competition to the professional audience.

The ISL offers an innovative format of team-based competition with the aim to promote competitive swimming and increase its profile to the media, broadcasters, advertisers, and sponsors. The new format will see the gender-mixed teams of the world's top swimmers compete for team scores and ultimately for the champion's title of the league.

The ISL team, who are professionals with relevant expertise, will explain the philosophy behind the project, the concept and its implications for the future of swimming, the positive change that is anticipated for the whole swimming community (athletes, coaches, clubs and federations, etc.) and other details.

We'd like you to be a part of the event. This will be a unique occasion to learn about the fresh initiative straight from its creators, ask them your questions or take an exclusive interview. We would be delighted to have you attend and share the news with your dear readers.

All the Best,
John Leonard

Fwd: Results of Fathers’ Day Competition

--- Forwarded message ---------
From: Brian Dorricott <brian@briandorricott.com>
Date: Mon, Sep 3, 2018 at 8:13 PM
Subject: Results of Fathers' Day Competition

On Sunday I got a challenge from my 8-year-old son. Could I beat him in the 100m sprint?

That got me thinking about competition in general and I put together an 85 second video (now on LinkedIn) of my take on what competition means for a new idea.

Of course, this is one of the many points I cover in the Lean Commercialisation Program. I've just posted a sneak preview of the next tip. Are there any statements like "There is no competition." that you'd like rebuffing in a similar way?

So, did I beat him?

I lost by 0.03 second.

Looks like I need to do some more training with our Greyhound!

Brian

Trib coverage of water polo at Highland Park Pool on Saturday

https://TinyURL.com/water-polo-trib

Pass the word. Bring a lawn chair, snacks and some cold drinks in a cooler. Plus, your swim suit, of course. Pool opens in the shallow end at 1 pm. Just pay the day rate if you don't have a pool tag.

Fwd: Political 'Purism'

------ Forwarded message ---------
From: John H

Attached are two interesting articles in one attachment dealing with what is termed 'political purism', or the idea that those who pretend to be liberals or progressives when they are really moderate conservatives (think Democratic Party establishment) deserve to be called out on their falsity.  The first article by Paul Street, who is apparently responding to personal attacks on him for being a 'purist' for making such calls on a regular basis.  As most of you know who receive these missives, I have a great deal of respect for Paul Street and his willingness to speak the truth, as best as I know it, about our abominable two party political system which serves only the interest of the corporate, financial and military elite.  The second article by Rob Seimetz appears to take a contrary position (although I'm not certain that it actually does) in stating that this may, in fact, distract us from the goals of developing a strong political force to deal with the critical issues facing all of humanity today.  Try to read them both and form your own opinions.

Fwd: Lest we Forget

------- Forwarded message ---------
From: John H

Lest we forget how it is that we came to this current crisis of confidence in government, Marshall Auerback takes us back through some relatively recent history to point out that the criminality now being touted as a reason for the impeachment of a president (no matter how deserving that might be) is really small potatoes compared to that which Obama and his administration managed to studiously overlook following the 2008 Great Financial Crisis.  The Democrats managed to ennoble crime and criminals, not only enabling them to escape prosecution, but also allowing them to keep their positions and all of their ill-gotten gains – and more!  The result, as economist William Black as said, is a purely criminogenic society which can only find the nerve to hold low-level white collar and street criminals, particularly if they are of color, accountable for their crimes.  And, I don't know about you, but this was not the America I grew up admiring.

And this doesn't even begin to account for the international crimes that the United States has been responsible for over the past 60 years or so – and these are notoriously bi-partisan crimes of election which have taken millions of innocent lives.  It's long past time that all of these criminals be held to account for their actions!  And this can only take place if the American people can somehow wake up from decades of propaganda induced somnambulance and demand accountability from their leaders.

Fwd: John McCain retrospective

------ Forwarded message ---------
From: John H
Now that the political establishment and the mainstream media are steaming full-speed ahead to lionize John McCain as an indefatigable man of the people and political savant in a time of political morass, it is time to evaluate the "real" John McCain for what he was and what he really stood for.  Attached are two articles which attempt to paint a much more accurate portrayal of McCain.

Fwd: If the worst should happen… swim to survive

---- Forwarded message ---------
From: Rowdy Gaines

Let me tell you a story....

A year ago last August, Hurricane Harvey put a third of Houston under water, killing 88 people.
During the flood, Alma Jimenez and her daughters were forced to evacuate their home. Thankfully, the girls had been participating in a free learn-to-swim program offered by the Harris County Aquatics Program — a Make a Splash Local Partner in Houston.
As Isaura and Briana stepped into the waist-high waters, Alma reassured them: "Don't be afraid even though the water is moving fast. You know how to swim. If the worst should happen and we get separated, swim to survive. We will find each other again when it is safe."
Even though the family lost everything, Alma directly credits the USA Swimming Foundation's Make a Splash initiative with helping her children survive.
With gratitude,
Rowdy Gaines
U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist &
USA Swimming Foundation Ambassador
P.S. As a parent, grandparent and lifelong swimmer, I'm asking you to join me in helping more children learn how to swim, regardless of their race, gender or financial circumstances. Your contribution provides crucial funding for our Make a Splash initiative and all of our programs that save lives and build champions—in the pool and in life.

PROJECT GHANA 2018

NOVEMBER 17 - 24th

ISLA Returns to Ghana! In 2016 we deployed an international team of lifeguard instructors, who conducted our most challenging training program consisting of over 120 training course participants. In the end, our ISLA instructors and participants rose to the challenge, and the government established a national rescue unit comprised of various military and public safety personnel. The Ghana National Aquatic Rescue Unit (GNARU) was born!

Checkout the pics from our 2016 project: This year our team of International Lifeguards will be working with GNARU to conduct our  a 3-day Basic Open water Lifeguard Course in Accra, Ghana. Our ISLA Team will then spend a couple of days shopping, touring, and experiencing the local culture. This will be an adventure you can't miss!

Volunteer applications close August 26th. The selection process is highly competitive; apply early to give application an extra edge.
