Fwd: Threats abound

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: John Hemington

These days it seems as if threats of various enormity abound almost everywhere.  Cable news seems never to stop selling fear and loathing – regardless of which political agenda is being cast as the evil one.  But there is one very real threat that few media of any stripe are reporting and it may be, in many respects, the most serious of all.  That is the accumulation derivatives by the four major Wall Street mega-banks as detailed in the attached article by Pam and Russ Martens of Wall Street on Parade.  One bank, Citi, holds derivatives with a notional value of $54.8 trillion dollars.  To get an idea of just how problematic this is, the global GDP of all nations is estimated to be only $75.6 trillion in notional value.  As stated in the article, there is no way that there could ever be sufficient counter-parties to cover this in the event of another financial crash.  More importantly, little or nothing has been done since the Great Financial Crisis of 2008 (GFC) to correct the problems in the financial industry which led to the 2008 crash.  Dodd-Frank when passed was too little, too late and it has since then diluted and de-toothed at the behest of these financial titans.  When the next crash comes, and it almost certainly will, since the same basic players remain in charge both in and out of government, it is likely to be far more devastating and destructive than the one which preceded it.

If there was not a sufficient threat from nuclear war given the insane policies put in place by the Trump administration, not to mention the two previous administrations, cataclysmic financial crises almost always lead to global warfare.  We got lucky in 2008 because the financial bleeding was stopped, but the non-financial victims were never made whole as were the bankers who got to keep all of their ill-gotten gains as well as all of their power to continue operating multi-trillion dollar gambling operations – which is what derivatives really are.  Unfortunately, the main stream media will almost never pay attention to the criminals in high places and instead focus on crime in the streets.  As a result, it is likely that, as before, the crisis will almost certainly find most Americans unprepared (though it is certainly difficult for one to know how to prepare for such a collapse).   Because the victims of the 2008 GFC have never been made whole and have since been ignored and/or denigrated by both major political parties, we have the rise of right-wing nationalism and the election of a very dangerous president with little capacity for restraint or for rational decision making.  As such these are extremely volatile times in which almost any event can lead to catastrophic consequences for us all.

Fwd: War without end . . .

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: John H

Sometimes it seems that we have somehow traveled into a far future of dystopian absurdism and are trapped in an endless repetition of mass insanity, only to discover that this future is our present – a present too awful to be believed.

Most Americans are simply unable or willing to grasp the fact that the United States has become the evil empire that we are constantly told is a threat to our very existence.  Unfortunately, it is all too true that the U.S. has, in fact, become a threat not only to our continued existence, but to the existence of every human on the planet.  Our propensity to wage war against anyone and everyone who displeases us, or threatens to sell their oil for Euros rather than for Dollars, or operates a stable regime in the Middle East or Southeast Asia, or a freaky, paranoid regime on the Korean peninsula or wherever we might decide our corporate interests are threatened by national interests other than our own has become virtually unlimited.

We have senior military personnel and political leaders who are convinced that we can (and should) win a nuclear war with Russia and China since it will certainly insure our domination of the earth forever more.  This is insanity and we are riding the cusp of a wave of political narcissism that seems for the moment to be unstoppable.

Attached are two articles examining some to this madness which I strongly urge you to read.

STEM and Educational insights - Groundhog Day

---------- Forwarded message
From: John H

I have been reading a particularly interesting book, The Battle for Homestead – 1880-1892: Politics, Culture and Steel, which documents enormous similarities between the Robber Baron era of the 1890s and the Neoliberal era of today. Many of these are highly disconcerting, but one, in particular, took my breath away:

In 1892, on the opening his first library in the United States in Braddock, Pennsylvania, Andrew Carnegie “elaborated on the moral, and indeed the very ethic of his library: ‘Useful knowledge’ did not embrace classical learning, what we today call the liberal arts. Rather, the ‘new idea of education’ was to concentrate, as the new library most assuredly would, on the study of business and science alone.” *
Can everyone, in unison, chant “teaching STEM.” This, of course, goes hand-in-hand with downplaying and ignoring the liberal arts. The idea then, just as it is today, was to create a culture of compliant skilled workers who would readily follow orders without questioning the rationale or the authority of leaders. In other words, educated drones, capable laborers never encouraged to think for themselves. To the extent that this succeeds we will all be the worse for it. I don’t for a minute suggest that we do not teach STEM courses, but that we should never give up teaching HISTORY, SOCIAL SCIENCES, CLASSICAL LITERATURE, ART and MUSIC.

Betsy DeVos, for all I am concerned, can go straight to HELL for what she and the Trump Administration are attempting to do to education. And, never forget, the move toward vouchers and private charter schools started in the Bill Clinton administration and has been supported by mainstream Democrats since then – it’s not just the Republicans! But without a good understanding of history; without the learned ability to think for one’s self which comes, one hopes, from a good liberal arts education, any hope for the continuation of a free republic are doomed.

The Great Depression stopped the Robber Barons for a while, will it take another such calamity, or worse, to stop the neoliberal robber barons of the 21st century?

Curling Trivia in Pittsburgh

Creating Literate Olympians Here!

Back in the day, I helped to start the Pittsburgh Curling Club. I wasn't around for long, but I was there at the outset. We should be curling on the South Side.

In curling, the team that wins the game / match buys the first round of adult beverages.

Public Statements: March 20, 2017 to PPS Board and Administration:

Mark Rauterkus, Varsity Swim Coach, Obama Academy.

I lead Swim & Water Polo after-school programs at Westinghouse (Mondays), Obama (Tuesdays & Thursdays), Allegheny (starting on Wednesdays), Arsenal (starting Fridays). Our Saturday Swim School (Oliver HS pool on the Northside) continues from 9 am to 1 pm (most weeks). At 6 am I'm at Sci-Tech three days a week. I coached Manchester Academic Charter School at the Sarah Heinz House and help with Pittsburgh Masters Water Polo and, of course, PPS Summer Dreamers. This year PPS Summer Dreamers' Swim & Water Polo is at King and U-Prep.

These activities are open to new participants, especially the Saturday Swim School. See my web sites at CLOH.org for details. CLOH = Creating Literate Olympians Here.

As we look to the summer, I'm going to be creating a new swimming, water polo and TRIATHLON team, on the Northside on Charles Street with The Pittsburgh Project.

Kids, adults, teachers, … we're hiring. Some of the varsity swimmers help, but we need about 35 as swim instructors, junior captains, guards, and coaches. Much of this work happens with the help of the Bloomfield-Garfield Corporation, and I'm activity recruiting employees.

Applyat the link at CLOH.org.

News flash:

Earlier this month, an Obama Swimmer, Sead Niksic, junior, set a new WPIAL Record in the class AA 100-yard backstroke. This is the first time a PPS student in any sport broke a WPIAL record. That news got a mentioned on the PPS home page.

All-in-all, our swimmers performed in brilliant fashion at the WPIAL and PIAA meets. After the snow storm, I took three of the Obama students to the PIAA meet. The Obama boys team finished in the top 20 in the state. All of the swimmers set personal and school records.
This was the 9th consecutive season our PPS kids from Schenley / Obama went to states.
Sead was second in the back and third in the fly. Noah scored 13th in the 500 free in his first trip to states as a sophomore. Amila, a freshman, dropped an additional 1-second in her backstroke, after getting 2nd at the WPIAL championships, having been seeded 10th.

Next news flash:

You, your spouse, coaches, swimmers, lifeguards, PE teachers, and all community members are invited to join in at a seminar and demonstration as well as post-game social to be held in Pittsburgh's South Side starting at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at the historic, Citiparks' Oliver Bath House. Out of town guest include aquatic experts with the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA.org) and Kevin McCarthy of Washington state, inventor of the aquatic game, SKWIM. Bring your swim suit and towel as we will put our PA friends into SKWIM games with opponents from around the nation. We'll learn about this terrific game, talk swimming, and find out what you might want to do to help get our kids swimming, more fit and safer in the water. We need to better utilize our facilities too.

After our time at the Oliver Bath House, all are invited to walk to a post game social starting at 9 pm at our home / office at 108 S. 12th Street, South Side, Pgh 15203.

October Reminder
In October 2016, I came to speak. My specific ask was for PPS support for WATER POLO instead of GOLF. The Obama golf team had one kid this year and none have made it to the final city-league match in the past two years. We have dozens of water polo players, and we own the pool. This would be a tremendous help for the students, programs and district in many ways. And, as a switch, it can be “budget neutral.”
I made that request to the board and the top administrators because you are the ones that will have to make it happen.
I find it sad that I have heard nothing about this issue from any of you since then.
Let's fix this for fall 2017.

New & Old Issues:
Furthermore, other matters, not well suited for public comment, need some attention. As we talk about district supported water polo, (we mainly need money for officials, some bus transit to matches and practice times at the school pool), we can share that list. This focused list of suggestions has many repeated requests from the past.

Fwd: There may be hope, with youth

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: John H

For those of us who are prone to giving up hope in this era of despicable political creatures running roughshod over the American landscape, there is a small bit of hope in the recognition that most Americans recognize the corrupt political landscape for what it is.  More importantly, the youth of the nation seem to be motivated for the first time in decades to join in the battle for a better life for all.  The Bernie Sanders Town Hall in West Virginia is but one telling example, but a great one, indicating that given the right direction the American people will rise up to change the system.  Unfortunately this direction will not be found within the leadership of either major political party.  Read the attached articles and see what is happening.

Fwd: The fruits of hubris

From: John H

Attached are two articles from Consortium News that are tangentially related but should each get your attention in a very visceral way.  The first is particularly chilling in that it describes a peculiar state of mind, which is apparently spreading through the defense department, in which senior military and political officials are convincing themselves that it is conceivable that the US could 'win' a nuclear war with Russia if we strike first.  More importantly, there is at least the suggestion that the sooner such an action can be taken the greater the likelihood of success.  This is clearly an insane premise.  Unfortunately, the second post, written by ex-British diplomat Alastair Crooke, describing in some detail Steve Bannon's worldview makes the premise of the first article much more likely.
I have to say that one, of the many, reasons I opposed Hillary's ascension to the presidency was her long-standing antipathy toward Vladimir Putin and Russia, along with her almost constant willingness to have the US engage in senseless wars all around the world.  Trump at least offered the case that he believed this to be foolhardy; and, while I was not in any way a Trump supporter, this at least seemed a more rational worldview.  Now we know that a Bannon-inspired Trump is no less a risk to the survival of the world than neocon-inspired Hillary.  Trump, on the other hand, has always been a greater threat to the social structure of the nation even though Clinton was no bargain herself.

Update for swimming

Noah Jamison, 10th grade, Obama, was officially notified that he has qualified for the PIAA Swim Class AA Championships at Bucknell starting March 15, 2017. He qualified with his fast performances in both the 200 IM and 500 free at the recent WPIAL meet. Noah set a new school record in the 500 free, 4:54.01, bettering a previous record from more than four years ago that was held by Erik Rauterkus, the oldest son of Head Coach Mark Rauterkus. This year marks the ninth consecutive year Coach Rauterkus has led PPS athletes to the state championships, and in 2017, three athlete get to compete: Jamison, Sead Niksic, 11, and Amilia Niksic, 9. The later two were automatic qualifiers. Sead is seeded second in both the 100 fly and 100 back.

Fwd: Big Data and Big Surveillance

---------- Forwarded message
From: John H

On Monday I sent out an article on Robert Mercer and Cambridge Analytica.  Today there is a follow-up of sort discussing Big Data and the Democratic Party establishment (the New Democrats and the DNC).  It takes some issue with the first article but is really worth reading.  The second attachment discusses enhanced surveillance techniques being employed by corporations on their employees.  This is an extremely frightening turn down the road toward complete totalitarian control of all workers and, perhaps, all of us whether working or not.  Do read this!

Fwd: I keep searching . . .

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Believe it or not, I keep searching for some good news to send around, but these are difficult to come by in this terrifying 'new world' of Trump & company.  However, if you weren't already frightened sufficiently, the two articles included in the PDF file attached from Consortium News should rattle your cage just a bit more.  It seems that ever since the election, Democratic Party elites are hoisting the banners for war just about anywhere it is not yet engulfing the world.  Not being satisfied with most of the Middle East and Afghanistan already in flames and chaos – with millions of people dead, wounded and displaced – the Democratic Party elites are calling for more blood and destruction so as not to be outdone by their Republican colleagues on this score.  Now legislation has been introduced in Congress, by a Democrat, to give Donald Trump unfettered authority, with no Congressional oversight, to attack and wage war on Iran any time he so pleases.  If this doesn't make you a bit uncomfortable, then you may want to check out the fires we are attempting to set in Ukraine, another of our favorite war charities – oh, and yes, China too.  It is true what the historians have said that dying empires are interesting places and times indeed.

Good night and good luck!

John
