412-Blast Email: Great time for a community cleansing. Schedule enclosed for your consideration.

Some are saying that today is "historic" in regard to the Supreme Court nomination drama unfolding in Washington D.C.

I think it is time to take a deep breath, jump in a swim pool, practice and model "playing well with others," and of course, wrap up by taking a good scrub, shower and cleansing. Let's prepare to live a another day.

I'm on a mission to promote "playing well with others," and can you your help, as soon as tonight and tomorrow and throughout the days to come.

Background:

The focus of my swim coaching for the past decade has been in the city of Pittsburgh, Now, it is growing to a much wider reach. I'm still at some city school pools, but we're offering aquatic experiences at South Park, Mt. Lebanon, Chartiers Valley and Moon.

9/27

Tonight, Thursday, the adult water polo players, https://Renegades.4rs.org, are going to help out with a game night with the new squad of scholastic players we call Pittsburgh Combined, https://waterpolo.cloh.org at South Park High School.

9/28

Tomorrow, Friday, from 7:15 to 9 pm, kids and adults (mentors, guardians, parents, coaches) are invited to our first SKWIM and water polo practice at the new, indoor, high school swim pool at Mt. Lebanon. Rookies welcome. Fun aquatic game play with a disk. Learn and perfect appropriate counter-attacks, offense and defense.

MeetUp page:

Gratis try-outs too.

10/2

Then on Tuesday, from 7:30 to 9 pm we go to another venue for the first time, Chariters Valley's high school pools. There we've got two pools and can play water polo in the deep tank and younger kids can work on teamwork, sportsmanship, fitness and swimming with the SKWIM disk and mentor leaders in the other pool.

MeetUp page:

Summary:

Sign up. SKWIM up. Scrub up and by all means -- live another day in healthy ways in our robust communities.

Peace.

Thanks for the consideration. Hope to see you, squeaky clean, out and about in the community soon.

Call if you have any questions or want to be removed from this list. Feel free to pass along the invite to others as well.

Fwd: Hot in the city -- invite to play well with others

Hi Friends,

A few invites to consider and pass along, mostly wet and cool -- in these hot times in the region.

#1.
At 6 pm on Tuesday, July 3, we've been invited to an informal swimming time trial and follow-up game of SKWIM at the Greensburg Country Club.

#2.
At 7 pm, July 4, is the start of our traditional Independence Day open house at our home on 12th Street in the Historic South Side, Both of our sons are expected to be here too.

#3.
From 6 to 7:45 pm on July 5, all are invited to Citiparks Ammon outdoor swim pool, corner of Bedford Ave and Memory Lane, for another of our regular Renegades (Masters) Water Polo practices Plus, we've been playing SKWIM in the middle of the pool too for kids and those not up for the full game of water polo. A reporter is expected, so we'd love to have a nice turn-out.

#4.
Pittsburgh Combined is looking for high school and middle school swimmers who want to play competitive water polo this fall. We have players from South Park and Mt. Lebo and some from the city too. See attached PDF. This is a non-league team, so students from any school can combine to play our pending "club" schedule. Practices are starting.

#5.
Our camper kids at The Pittsburgh Project have been going to the pool at Riverview Park and playing some SKWIM, while our Northside pool is under construction still. But, I've also been able to go elsewhere to lead informal game days at other pools as well. We had a great time at the South Hills Country Club last week. If you want to bring your group to us -- or if I can bring our equipment (disks, fins, etc.) and some players to you -- please call or email and let's set up a joint play date.

Stay safe. Hope to see you soon.

Ta.

Fwd: Crisis in the water --- and you're invited to the Saturday Swim School this week

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Mark Rauterkus
To: 412-public-news

Hi All, near and far!

We've got a crisis -- or a few of them -- in our future.

#1. Global engagement and fitness with kids seems to be in a decline.

A great commentary was published in Swimming World magazine about the crisis in a favorite domain of mine, competitive swimming.

From the international to the local scene, we need to evolve our interactions with our youth and gather all the support we can muster for our communities. Wellness -- from gun violence to school safety  -- matters. We've got to step up our game in many ways.

Check out my blog post with a pointer to that article on competitive swimming and a follow-up conversation about our one-size-fits-all solution.

#2. Regional

If you do nothing else, please click the PETITION directed at the school administrators at Eastern Michigan University who want to cut its super-successful men's swim team.

#3 Local Invite

Adults and high school kids are able to meet me on Saturday from 8:30 am to 11:30 for the Saturday Swim School.

Kids in middle and elementary school are able to swim from 11:30 to 1 pm.

I really want to get the former students of Swim & Water Polo from PPS Summer Dreamers back in the water and playing SKWIM.

There is no charge as this is a labor of love.

+ + +

#4 Three different Lifeguard Classes have been offered and are filling to capacity, also a part of the Saturday Swim School. https://Guard.CLOH.org to get on the waiting list.

#5. We're hiring both kids and adults to help with our summer activities at the pools in the city.

Fwd: Dan Kovalik book Discussion

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: John H

Don't forget Dan Kovalik's discussion of his book The Plot to Scapegoat Russia next Friday:

BOOK PRESENTATION AND DISCUSSION:

Friday, March 23, 2018
7:00 p.m.

Unitarian-Universalist Church of the South Hills

THE PLOT TO SCAPEGOAT RUSSIA
by Dan Kovalik
How the CIA and the Deep State use fear of Russia as a diversion to continue their policy of permanent war

"A powerful contradiction to the present US narrative of the world…  As shown here, fake news is thriving in Washington, DC." OLIVER STONE

Dan Kovalik is a highly respected international labor lawyer with the United Steel Workers Union and law professor at Pitt.  An internationally-recognized Human rights activist, Dan has travelled more than 30 times to Colombia and Venezuela, as well as many other areas in Central and South America, the Congo, Iran and other critical hotspots. His firsthand accounts and union perspective are critical contributions to Americans' understanding of US military and intelligence activities around the world.  Dan will discuss why the current saber-rattling and threats of nuclear war towards North Korea and Iran should be of concern to us all!
Dan's latest book, The Plot to Attack Iran, will be available soon from Amazon

Anyone involved in important domestic fights, such as healthcare, the environment, labor rights and union drives, immigration, discrimination, upcoming elections, etc., should be interested in this presentation.  US military wars and fronts around the world, as well as how the yearly increasing already bloated military budget for these adventures will greatly impact budgets here at home.  Available funds for domestic programs and every struggle down to the local and community level will be affected.  Please attend this important event.

THIS EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Fwd: USNA Summer Seminar and Summer STEM - Now is the Time!

Something to consider for summer for middle and high school students:

These programs at NAVY may interest some, especially if STEM-focused.

1.  For an out-of-the-ordinary STEM summer session at the U.S. Naval Academy (5 days, students residing in the dormitory, Bancroft Hall), and it's for 8th-10th Graders (for the Fall).  The Academy Admissions Office drafted the email notice itself, and passed it out to USNA Blue & Gold Officers around the country.  "Blue & Gold Officers" (like Coach Ed) work with the Admissions Office to help spread the word about not-your-normal but hopefully stimulating programs that younger students may find challenging, particularly if they love STEM or science fields.

2.  For a Summer Seminar about a college - a week like no other.  This is for rising Seniors who may be considering a career in the Navy or Marine Corps, and wish to see a bit of what it may be like (or more!)  Through the lens of one of the pathways to becoming an officer, at the U.S. Naval Academy.  Like the STEM Summer Session for younger students, this one is also residential, so parents drop 'em off and pick 'em up later!

Below is the approved USNA-style email advisory:

Fwd: Announcement of public meeting, Wednesday, Jan 24

Subject: announcement of public meeting

There will be a meeting to form a new organization of residents in Southwest Pennsylvania who believe in the need for radical change of our economic and political system.  This group will combine  activism with independent participation in local elections  to challenge a system that is run by and for the interests of a small corporate dominated elite who use racism and sexism  to divide us, and not in the interests of  the majority of the city and county's population. The group is organized to provide an alternative in Pittsburgh  based on the principles stated by Carl Redwood in his speech to the Thomas Merton Center this past June.  Available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZ6Uf64VUyU at 53.30

The meeting will discuss the basic platform of the group, what initial activities and campaigns we should get involved with, and our longer term strategy.  Wednesday January 24 from 7 pm to 9 pm, University of Pittsburgh Law School, 3900 Forbes Ave (corner of Forbes and Bouquet St) in Room 229.  For more information, contact Jules Lobel at 412-648-1375

Fwd: Start &Turn Clinic @ Chatham University on January 6th

---------- Forwarded message ---------

Dear Middle School Swim Team & Parents,

Chatham University's Swim Team coaches will be holding a Starts/Turns Clinic at Chatham pool near the end of the Ellis Winter Break, and I'm forwarding information for those of you who may be interested to attend!

It is for Grades 5 through 8, and will go from 12:30 PM - 500 PM.  The cost is $40.00, and registration is here:  Chatham Start and Turn Clinic.

They will cover open turns and flip turns, forward starts, backstroke starts, and relay takeoffs.  I haven't worked these as much into our workouts as much as I'd like due to our limited time in the water, so this is a great opportunity to dedicate time to these skills which really merit full periods of concentration.  The Clinic will be instructed by Head Coach Carter Crosby and great coaching staff.  Coach Carter has been a big supporter of the Ellis team and has been a mentor to myself in many aspects of coaching, so you're going to get good stuff!

This is an "off" weekend for Allegheny Mountain swimmers, so there are no AMS meets going on that weekend, and it's during the Ellis Winter Break, too.

Thank you separately for those of you who have expressed interest in practicing through the Winter Break, and please stay tuned for more word on that.

Ok, stay healthy, and see you all on deck,
Coach Ed
