No eligibility requirements necessary and all are welcome to attend. An ASCEND membership is not necessary.  We do ask that you please bring an ID and insurance card if you have it. Running Mate -- John H -- has passed suddenly

Some of you may already have heard and some of you may not have yet. Yesterday morning my Dad/ John suffered a heart attack and unfortunately, he passed away later that morning. I do not really know how to express to you the void that his absence will leave for me and my family. I like you over the years have become accustomed to his informative emails and articles. This seemingly never-ending flow of information that he was carefully curating to keep those of us who he knew and cared for informed was at times overwhelming. I know I did not get to nearly as many of the articles as I should have.  To you all whom he sent these emails, I want to express my deep-felt gratitude for your part in his life.  I saw those emails as an expression of the love he felt for all of you and his desire for a more just and equitable world.  He was an idealist who often struggled with the inequity that is present in the system and the complacency that exists as part of our collective society. I hope that you too felt the love that he gave as he shared his gloom and doom-laden missives. It was his idealism and principled discussion that gives me hope that while the world we inhabit is far from perfect there are always those like my Dad who will devote their energy to make the world a better place. I am reminded sitting here that he would often find the articles then take the time to reformat them so that they were more accessible to those of us who were not as devoted to the research as he was. Whether you agreed or disagreed with the content he presented, it was always with love and concern for the world he inhabited.

Pitt Information Technology has received reports of a data breach that occurred at ParkMobile in March 2021. ParkMobile makes the popular mobile parking app of the same name and provides metering and parking app services to the City of Pittsburgh. Some University of Pittsburgh garages may accept payments through ParkMobile, if you pay through the application.

 

What Data Was Affected?

 

ParkMobile indicates that basic user information was taken, including license plate numbers and, if provided by the user, email addresses, phone numbers, and vehicle nicknames. Encrypted passwords were taken but not the encryption keys necessary to read the passwords, meaning that significant resources would be needed to break the password encryption.

 

ParkMobile indicates that no credit cards or parking transaction history were accessed, and they do not collect Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, or dates of birth.

 

What Do I Need to Do?

 

If you have an account with ParkMobile, out of an abundance of caution, Pitt IT recommends you change that password as soon as possible.

 

While the data exposed in the alleged breach did not come from University systems, sometimes individuals reuse the same passwords on multiple websites. If you use the same or a similar password at Pitt or other websites, you should also change those passwords. Also, because of the nature of other data taken, be vigilant for an increase in phishing scams or other scams related to this data.

 

In addition, utilize the following good password practices to minimize your susceptibility to data breaches:

 

• Use a password manager to simplify the management of your various passwords. Pitt Password Manager (LastPass) is available at no cost to all students, faculty, and staff. You can use it to create strong, unique passwords for all your online services.
• Do not reuse passwords across different websites. Scammers try variations of known passwords, so it is important to make sure your passwords are not similar to each other.  
• Use strong, complex passwords that include symbols, numbers, and uppercase and lowercase letters.

• Change your passwords frequently.

• Use multifactor authentication on websites that allow it.

Well folks, here's the deal, I will no longer be sending out these political e-mails calling out establishment policies.  This morning I got hit upside the head with the news that my family believes that I am a loopy, loony-tune heading down a wormhole because my "extremist" politics are so far outside the mainstream.  Now, I do not agree with this assessment at all, but I am also convinced that if this is the way my own family feels then there is no hope and no real point in continuing to put in the effort to try and alert others to what is really happening out there in the world.  This tells me that the plutocrats and the corporate warmongers have won.  That humanity's time on this wonderful planet is not to persist much longer – certainly not for many more generations.  The way things are now trending with the current administration's foreign policy we could well see a catastrophic nuclear war in our own lifetime.  Should we somehow avoid that disaster, we will almost certainly not escape the catastrophe of climate change much sooner than scientists now predict.

 

Sadly, mainstream politics, whether the Democratic Party variety or the more bizarre Republican variety have no answers to any of the most serious problems facing humanity.  Nor are they even willing to willing to pretend to actually address them.  Furthermore, there is no hope in this country for a viable third-party to develop and prosper.  So, we are left with the endless nonsense of political Kabuki Theater of impossible corporate subsidy solutions that never address real issues while more and more people starve in the streets.  At the same time, this most powerful nation on earth creates almost daily holocausts in nations all around the globe in the name of protecting "human rights".  We are, whether we like to acknowledge it or not, an evil people. We allow our government, in the name of patriotism and corporate profit, to destroy the lives of millions of others, both here and abroad, without any serious concern or dissent.

 

These have been issues I have struggled with ever since I left the Army in 1970.  And contrary to my family's belief that my obsession is of recent origin.  It is not.  However, I just don't have the energy to keep this up in the face of so much apathy at home and among those "progressive" legislators I have supported financially and otherwise.  Legislators who have refused to use the power of their votes to push the establishment Democrats to really adopt progressive portions that they claimed to support in Biden's campaign in much the same way as the conservative Democrats have used their votes to quash progressive ideas for years.  It is all very demoralizing and I am not willing to continue the battle from here on out.  This is not what I had hoped to be saying today, but my mental health and family health must take precedence over my political desires.

At UPMC, we are committed to protecting our communities from COVID-19 in every way possible. To date, we have provided more than 300,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines to health care workers, residents of long-term care facilities, and community members who are 65 and older or at high risk of severe illness and complications from COVID-19. We are eager to continue expanding our vaccine effort as more supplies become available. Another promising breakthrough in COVID-19 care is monoclonal antibody treatment. The treatment, given soon after testing positive for COVID-19, has dramatically reduced the risk of hospitalization and death from COVID-19 in our patients. New CDC School Guidelines: What to Know

Earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated its guidelines on preventing COVID-19 spread in schools. The new recommendations apply specifically to K-12 schools. They include updated guidelines on physical distancing between students, as well as the importance of ventilation. Should Pregnant Women Get the COVID-19 Vaccine?

Pregnant women are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine under Pennsylvania's Phase 1a. In the coming weeks, we will be offering vaccination clinics for pregnant women at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital. These clinics are for pregnant women only. If you are pregnant and wish to sign up to receive a vaccine at UPMC Magee, call 833-653-0519. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), pregnant and lactating women who are eligible should be free to get the COVID-19 vaccine if they choose. Women who are pregnant are at greater risk for severe illness from COVID-19 than women who aren’t pregnant. Pregnant women also are at greater risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as preterm birth. The authorized COVID-19 vaccines were not tested on pregnant women during clinical trials. However, all available data since vaccination distribution began suggests the vaccines are safe for both pregnant women and their unborn babies. The risk of COVID-19 is greater than the risk of vaccination. If you are pregnant and wish to learn more about receiving the vaccine, we encourage you to talk to your doctor. Gary just posted a note on the Celebrating the Life of Anne Feeney discussion board: As a newly-oradined host, Anne was one of my very first interviews on "We Do The Work", our weekly half-hour labor radio program originating from the Skagit Valley in northwestern Washington state. I had met her a couple times during her various tours through the region...and even performed at a Tacoma-based fundraiser to assist with her medical fees. More recently, I shared a stage with her as we both performed to raise money for mutual friends who were enduring severe medical and financial days. I, of course, opened...well aware the audience was primed for Anne. I felt like Tiny Tim warming up the audience for Neil Young. Anne was a great interview. All I really had to do was start a sentence with "tell me about _______" and sit back as she regaled me with stories of her family history in labor activism and her own path as a musician, songwriter, labor lawyer, and AFM local president. We discussed the brain condition that was supposed to have killed her years earlier...but like many of her other foes, didn't have the guts to confront her. Of all the issues we discussed, the most compelling was the debate as to which of our fathers had been the oldest draftee in WWII. After all the math, her dad won the dubious title by a matter of months. It was only recently that I learned my dad had actually been born two years earlier. I never had the heart to publish the correction. Theopening and closing theme of "We Do The Work", throughout its entire run, was Anne's version of John Fromer's great song of the same name. So, as we expanded our market to about eight states, more and more listeners were introduced to us by Anne's singing. She was heard more than any of the various hosts and commentators. The show, in a way, was an Anne Sandwich. Due to Covid closing our studio and other issues, we decided to discontinue the show. We unanimously decided our final broadcast would be a rebroadcast of her interview. As it is wont to do do, fate added a major piece of irony to the event. Anne Feeney died within a day of that broadcast. Rest in Power, sister Anne! Art All Night is embarking on its 24th year of celebrating art, music, and performance in a free, non-juried, non-censored show!

Because of the pandemic, 2021 will be our 2nd virtual show, this time at the end of April.  Art All Night needs one thing in order to be successful: a planning team of dedicated people to take on the responsibilities required for show preparation.

Planning members meet most Wednesdays on Zoom from now until the end of April to discuss everything that goes into planning our virtual show. We are especially excited for new virtual ideas to incorporate in 2021 and new ways to do some of the old favorite things.

Tomorrow on the Tom Woods Show I'll be talking to economist Bob Murphy, with whom I used to co-host the podcast Contra Krugman, about what's going on with GameStop stock, hedge funds, and government.   It's been quite something to watch, though.   If the average American suffers a loss, that's a darn shame. If big players suffer a loss, shut everything down!   Hedge fund Melvin Capital just closed out its short position after suffering a massive loss.   How could this have happened? A bunch of newbs on Reddit coordinated something this massive?   I'm not sure that they really are newbs. They sound pretty darn informed to me.   Regardless, what a moment this is. How much more obvious can the elites make it? Things are supposed to go the way we want. When they don't, we go crying to regulators to save us. And the media can be counted on to report our version of events.   These days I think a lot of people have become so demoralized that they think they have no power. The Establishment dominates everything, and there is no hope.   But that isn't so.   If the Establishment had things well in hand, they wouldn't need to propagandize us so relentlessly.   And I hope it's obvious that this is true also in your own life and your own business: even in this day and age, the little guy can prosper.   Yes, the bad guys have been making some disturbing moves lately. Thanks for all the materials and contributions to our photo album for Aunt Audrey of Florida. The photo book turned out great with many photos covering the entire family. Aunt Audrey loved it.

We spent an afternoon with Audrey, Barbara and her children (David and Melody), Diane & Phil and their children (Joe and Jennifer), and Linda & Chuck (with Andrew and Chester). It was a wonderful visit, but too short a time.

New Members

It is exciting to learn that our extended family has grown in numbers with two new members. Stephen Taylor in July of 92 and Jennifer Marie Kirby in August 92.

Reasons to Celebrate

We’ve got good reasons for a celebration, now lets have one. A party is planned for Saturday, October 3, 1992 at noon (to whenever) at Duff Park in Penn Hills.

Directions to the Park and Party

Take the Penn Hills exit off of the Parkway East. Take the exit which blends into Rodi Road. Follow Rodi Road and turn LEFT off of Rodi Road onto Duff Road. The corner of Rodi and Duff has Alway Tires, Ryan Auto Glass and Newport Square.

Follow Duff Road up a long hill, and at the crest of the hill at a baseball field, make a sharp left turn. The road is before the school and beside the tennis courts. This road leads directly to the Park Pavilion and our party.

Bringing Things

If Uncle Joe’s family wold bring deserts and Aunt Margaretmary's family would bring salads, Uncle Leo’s family will do the rest.
