Fwd: Start &Turn Clinic @ Chatham University on January 6th

---------- Forwarded message ---------

Dear Middle School Swim Team & Parents,

Chatham University's Swim Team coaches will be holding a Starts/Turns Clinic at Chatham pool near the end of the Ellis Winter Break, and I'm forwarding information for those of you who may be interested to attend!

It is for Grades 5 through 8, and will go from 12:30 PM - 500 PM.  The cost is $40.00, and registration is here:  Chatham Start and Turn Clinic.

They will cover open turns and flip turns, forward starts, backstroke starts, and relay takeoffs.  I haven't worked these as much into our workouts as much as I'd like due to our limited time in the water, so this is a great opportunity to dedicate time to these skills which really merit full periods of concentration.  The Clinic will be instructed by Head Coach Carter Crosby and great coaching staff.  Coach Carter has been a big supporter of the Ellis team and has been a mentor to myself in many aspects of coaching, so you're going to get good stuff!

This is an "off" weekend for Allegheny Mountain swimmers, so there are no AMS meets going on that weekend, and it's during the Ellis Winter Break, too.

Thank you separately for those of you who have expressed interest in practicing through the Winter Break, and please stay tuned for more word on that.

Ok, stay healthy, and see you all on deck,
Coach Ed

Fwd: Request for Proposals: Seed Award for Economic Opportunity

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: The Sprout Fund

Sprout and BNY Mellon Foundation of Southwestern Pennsylvania are requesting collaborative proposals for working groups to increase economic opportunity in Pittsburgh.
View this email in your browser

Request for Proposals

Through the generous support of the BNY Mellon Foundation of Southwestern Pennsylvania, The Sprout Fund is seeking proposals to mobilize collaborative, community-led projects that enhance opportunities for residents of all backgrounds to contribute to the economic vitality of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County.

Three working groups will receive $5,000 grants to develop collaborative solutions to expanding economic opportunity in the region. Following a community-advised process, one working group will be supported with up to $40,000 in catalytic resources to implement their project.

Working group applications are due January 26, 2018. Supported working group activities will take place from February to April 2018, and a second community-advised decisionmaking process will take place in May 2018 to select the most promising project.

Prospective participants are encouraged to submit an inquiry form and host a pre-application planning meeting prior to submitting a proposal.

Seed Award for Economic Opportunity

Despite recent gains, economic opportunity isn't distributed equitably across Pittsburgh. While the region earns national acclaim for innovation and livability, the inclusiveness of our region's job growth lags far behind that of other American cities.

In November 2017, The Sprout Fund hosted an ideation session to better understand community priorities for expanding economic opportunity in Pittsburgh. As participants considered their own definitions of economic opportunity, two key themes emerged: equal access and local context. Participants emphasized the importance of making resources accessible to all and expressed the critical need to meet community members where they are, starting with a process that asks people to define their own needs and articulate their own vision of success. The Sprout Fund's Seed Award for Economic Opportunity seeks to expand on these themes and the efforts of people already working in this space by mobilizing collaborative approaches that expand economic opportunity for all.

Sprout is requesting collaborative proposals from local organizations with a demonstrated aptitude for convening diverse organizations. Three applications will be selected to become working groups that will develop complete project proposals through a series of ideation and community feedback meetings in winter and spring 2018.

Review the complete Request for Proposals and get started
Support for this project is generously provided by the BNY Mellon Foundation of Southwestern Pennsylvania.

Fwd: Warning, take heed!

-------- Forwarded message ---------
From: John H

I'm sending this article out to a much wider group of folks than I normally would, but Christmas is approaching and there will be endless pitches to purchase some form of voice-controlled home management or entertainment system.  As the article details, these systems are the ultimate privacy destroyers.  Unless you don't care at all about your privacy at home it would be wise to avoid such devices.

Fwd: Trump's America . . . one year out

 Forwarded message ---------
From: John H
Well, it's been almost a year in Trumplandia and Henry Giroux offers his take on where we as a people have come (or, perhaps I should say, sunk) during this period.  On the other end, he offers some cogent suggestions about where and how we need to move forward if we are to somehow climb out of the primeval wasteland of a swamp into which we have sunk.

Fwd: Dominate Facebook: 6 Types of Facebook Posts

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Scott Oldford <so@goinfinitus.com>

A while ago...
I asked if you wanted to know more about the 6 post types on Facebook...

There was a LOT of interest...
So, I figured I'd share it with you now...

Enjoy
===================

The 6 Types of Post You Need To Dominate Facebook in 2018
Although I spend a lot of money on Facebook Ads,  it's organic Facebook posts that create the best engagement and long-term value. The problem is, if you don't go about your Facebook Content Strategy in the right way, you get zero value.

And I'm afraid to say most people go about it the wrong way.

You can fix this with a quick tweak to your Facebook marketing strategy, so if you want to dominate Facebook in 2018, listen up because I want to share my personal approach (and show you how easy and inexpensive it is).

Introducing The 6 Types of Facebook Post
As you may have noticed, Facebook is a bit of a minefield. It's packed with content, and most of it will not help you. Your audience faces the same issue, so the chances of standing out and building trust with them is slim if you do what everyone else does.

So if you want to dominate Facebook in 2018, you need to embrace these six Facebook Story Types. This Facebook marketing strategy will  help you connect with your audience in a big way, and if you combine all six you will develop a super power that sets you apart from your competitors.

1: Personal Philosophy or Belief
The first (and in my opinion, most important) story type, is the personal philosophy / belief posts that show your audience who you are.

This isn't about you ranting and preaching, and telling everyone else how wrong they are. This is simply a post where you share what you believe, based on what has worked for you in the past.

For instance, here a few of my own Personal Belief Posts:

The reason these types of post are so powerful is that they bring you closer to the 'right' kind of person, and drives you away from the 'wrong' kind. The truth is, you cannot serve everyone. Your job is to create massive value for those you can, and attract those with the same mission and purpose as your own.

2: Personal Story
Sharing personal stories with your audience is important, especially when they include some form of tactical takeaway. Achieve this and your audience will be both emotionally and logically impacted, which means they magnetize towards you and your content.

Here are a few of my own personal story posts:

Your personal stories also provide a glimpse into your own life, and forces you to 'bleed on the page'. Remember, there's a lot of white noise on Facebook, and your job is to make your audience feel something. A sure way to do this and build trust is to invite them into your story.

3: Lifestyle
This is not about showing off your car or vacation, but rather how you and your team live life.  Likewise, this isn't about bragging about what you have, but it is about you showing your audience how you go about your everyday.

Some of my own lifestyle story posts include:

Sharing these lifestyle posts is important, because like your personal story, it invites your audience into your life and shows them how you live outside of work. It's shows them you're a real person, and gives them a glimpse into the "real" you.

4: Results (how to training)
Although you can share some of your own results some of the time, the secret here is to focus on other people's (aka: how you have helped your audience succeed). When you do this, you aren't bragging, rather elevating someone else (and making them the hero).

Here are some of my own story types that focus on results:

Where possible, include an element of 'how to training' in these posts so they show your audience how to achieve the same success. And when you do share your own results, make sure it includes an element of your personal story, so it doesn't come across as bragging.

5: Question
I hate it when people ask dumb (and pointless) questions on Facebook. The questions you ask your audience can be about anything (not always business), but each one you do ask NEEDS to have purpose.

Here are some question I've asked that sparks both an emotional and a logical response:

Don't be afraid to ask questions and encourage your audience to engage, but DO NOT ask questions for the sake of it. The moment you do, you become part of the white noise that people hate.

6: Invitation (ASK)
This final type of post involves you inviting your audience to do something: join a webinar, download a new guide, read a new article you're working on…

This can be a standard call to action, or as I like to do, invite your audience to decide what you should and should not create:

Technically, a single post could include all six of these elements, but the best ones tend to focus on one or two.

If you want to dominate Facebook in 2018, you need to embrace all six so someone goes from personal belief, to personal story, to lifestyle, to results, and so on…

When you compile these so they follow in succession, what you end up with is a magical formula where your audience gets to know you, themselves, connects and builds trust with you and your work, and then says yes the moment you invite them to dive deeper.
Whether you build an organic Facebook marketing strategy around this or use it in your paid advertising, you become an omnipresent and relevant force of nature that is top of mind at all times.

Enjoy and Talk Soon!

Fwd: Be There Contest!

Funny. The Be There Campaign notice came one day before the deadline for the entry.

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Subject: Be There Contest!

Good morning,

My name is CV (webmaster edited) and I am a new team member here at United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania with the Be There Campaign. I wanted to kick-off my start with figuring out a way to engage with the region and celebrate school attendance. I thought that a contest would be the perfect opportunity to do so! I know that you are a participant of a past Be There Contest, so I wanted to reach out to see if you would be interested in this one too!

Everyday our students enter through doors to places of learning. The contest requires groups of students (homerooms, clubs, organizations, etc) to pick a door in their school or organization and decorate it to show what it looks like when that room has excellent attendance for any given day. My hope is that when students see the door they chose to decorate throughout the year, they are reminded that the room is a better place when everyone is there!

Here is the link to sign-up: https://goo.gl/forms/coUY0swK2MExQEdc2. More information is provided in the link including prizes and ideas. The deadline is November 30th, but I know that this date is quickly approaching, so if you need a little extra time to organize a group that is no problem just let me know! I hope you are able to join in on this fun opportunity to celebrate attendance!

All the best,
