Applied for the swim coaching post at West Mifflin

October 9, 2002
Athletic Director
High School
West Mifflin School District
Pittsburgh, PA

Dear Mr. Relich,
Please consider this letter, resume and associated information as an application for the open position of Varsity Swim Coach for the Swimming and Diving Teams.
I am excited about the possibilities of becoming a member of the Titans Athletic Department. I believe my qualifications and goals match the position.
A few weeks ago I met Steve at the pool in an informal setting and passed him my resume. I was impressed with the activities at the pool and the number of assistants he has engaged with the overall programs. Plus, of course, the new facility is wonderful.
Steve wants to do some special things with the overall programs and I believe that I can bring such excitement and pursuits to the studentathletes. I look forward to talking with you about such plans and the overall vision.
Thanks for your consideration.
Sincerely Yours,

Coaching Highlights:

Developed a team of 200 swimmers in Peoria, Illinois that won the Sportsmanship Award two consecutive years, placed swimmers at national meets, set new state records in multiple individual and relay events, and claimed second place in the state junior and senior championships. At a Zone meet in Minnesota, four PAWW swimmers in various age groups captured individual gold medals.

At Bradley University, rushed to the call to become Interim Head Coach to replace veteran coach, Jim Spinks, as he recovered from a massive stroke at the season's outset. The team rallied throughout the season. BU swam against Iowa, Notre Dame, Northern Illinois, etc. Every swimmer but one accomplished lifetime personal best times at the Mid West Independent Championships. Bradley retained its fourth place team ranking. Individual swimmers (Mike Murray and Bjorn Anderson) finished 1st and 2nd in the 200 fly, 1:51 on the meets final day.

At Ohio University, gladly worked for four seasons under a master coach, Fletcher Gilders. Handled all in-season recruiting and assisted with every team functions from Florida training trips to building the team's dry-land equipment. In this period, OU advanced in the 10-team Mid-American Conference Championship Meet from 8th to 6th, to 3rd and 3rd.

In back-to-back seasons, led the girls squad at Plum High School to its highest ever team performance, 2nd place, at the WPIAL Championships. Plum's 400-free relay finished in first place both seasons, earning All-American honors and setting a time of 3:35.66 (1993).

Coached Plum senior, Jim Rumbaugh, to two WPIAL records and the PIAA record in the 200 IM (1:52.85). He later became a captain at Tennessee and swam a leg in a medley relay that broke an American record.

The Athens Swim Club swimmers often claimed high-point awards at the Ohio Double A Championships. In one meet, ASC swimmers won three out of the six age groups high point awards: 10-under boys, 10-under girls and 11-12 boys with Ted Steiner, 1112, named swimmer of the meet. For five consecutive years, at least one ASC swimmer was the high point winner at the state championship meet.
