Ellis Community, last night wrapped up our fall season in athletics, so I thought I would take some time to rundown all of the accomplishments for our student-athletes.
The Varsity Field Hockey team are the 2022 WPIAL Champions! They took on Aquinas in the championship game and secured a 3-1 victory. The team fell short last night in the first round of state to a tough Newport team, but they had a heck of a season this year. The team was led by a competitive senior class and we're so excited to see what they do next year. WPIAL and State teams have yet to be announced for field hockey, but I'm sure we'll have some girls make those lists.
Varsity Soccer completed their season with two big wins over Carlynton. Senior Elinor Waldron was voted WPIAL All-Section for her play this season. I know these girls are eager to get back on the field and many of them will be participating in an indoor league this winter.
Senior Grace Boyer represented our Varsity Cross Country team in the WPIAL Championships. She placed 41st out of 147 athletes, just six places shy of state qualification! The team was led by seniors Grace and Sreethi, who PR'd multiple times this season and the team had many solid finishes in their races with the help of Evi and Angelina.
Varsity Tennis had a very successful fall, qualifying for the WPIAL playoffs. They competed and lost a tight match to Beaver Area High School in the first round of the tournament. Senior Mia Carter was recognized as an Honorable Mention in the inaugural Western Pennsylvania Tennis Sportsmanship Award. The award honors tennis players who are friendly, fair, and display characteristics of outstanding sportsmanship. This award was especially impressive for her to win because players are only nominated by opposing players, coaches, or officials. We're proud to have her represent our school in this way!
We currently have SIX athletes who are committed to compete in their sports in college: Athena Iverson (softball), Zoe Woon (field hockey), Katie Anderson (lacrosse), Abby Fagersten (field hockey), Grayson Honig (field hockey), and Ilona Bender (field hockey & lacrosse). We will be honoring all of these girls at our school-wide signing day on April 11th at 9:30am in the gym or on the field (weather permitting). Mark your calendars, this is going to be an exciting day!
MS Field Hockey finished their season with a redemption win against Shady Side and ended with an outstanding record of 8-2. MS soccer finished the season with 2 ties and 5 losses and lots of improvement. MS cross country won their last two meets of the season and showed a lot of growth. We're so excited for the future of our athletic programs with these middle schoolers in our programs.
Lastly, our club crew team has also had a very successful season with Reese McGeary earning silver and gold medals over the course of their fall season. Excited to see them start competing again in the spring.
