Recruiting tips and tricks for the new year

Welcome to 2018!
The new year is traditionally a time to look ahead and create goals to be productive in the months to come. As you think about your resolutions for 2018, consider what you'd like to accomplish in your recruiting strategy. What worked in 2017 and what needs to change?
If you're looking for some recruiting inspiration, NCSA Team Edition user Scott Barker of Case Batbusters has a few pieces of advice: "Learn how the recruiting process works so you can truly guide your players and their parents through the recruiting journey. I'd also say be honest with college coaches, players and parents. Honesty and integrity will go a long way to developing a good reputation, which is essential."
At NCSA, our goals for the new year are simple: Continue to improve our recruiting resources so coaches, athletes and families can better navigate the complex recruiting process. We have a lot of ideas to put into action in 2018, but we're always looking for feedback.
Is there a particular piece of content that would really help your families? Is there an aspect of the recruiting process that you'd like more clarity on? If you have any thoughts or suggestions, please send them to teamedition@ncsasports.org.
And, as always, happy recruiting!

There will be a meeting to form a new organization of residents in Southwest Pennsylvania who believe in the need for radical change of our economic and political system.  This group will combine  activism with independent participation in local elections  to challenge a system that is run by and for the interests of a small corporate dominated elite who use racism and sexism  to divide us, and not in the interests of  the majority of the city and county's population. The group is organized to provide an alternative in Pittsburgh  based on the principles stated by Carl Redwood in his speech to the Thomas Merton Center this past June.  Available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZ6Uf64VUyU at 53.30

The meeting will discuss the basic platform of the group, what initial activities and campaigns we should get involved with, and our longer term strategy.  Wednesday January 24 from 7 pm to 9 pm, University of Pittsburgh Law School, 3900 Forbes Ave (corner of Forbes and Bouquet St) in Room 229.  For more information, contact Jules Lobel at 412-648-1375

More Bike Lanes -- as I've got some experience with them in Chengdu, China

More bike lanes! Because, some day, I'm going to be the one in the back seat! Plus, the brakes on that sucker didn't work so much. The brake on the bar for the front tire flew off the first time I applied pressure, flipping forward. The only real stopping power came from the sick break, in the middle of the frame. To stop, push downward. The question was always, use both hands to turn away from the crash, and be with less grip in the pending collision. Or, put a hand on the brake while reaching downward getting out of balance, but protecting some other vulnerable body positions.

Fwd: [Camp-AK-O-MAK] Ak-O-Mak New Year’s Greeting 2018

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Dianne <dianne@campakomak.com>

Subject: [Camp-AK-O-MAK] Ak-O-Mak New Year's Greeting 2018
To: Camp Ak-O-Mak <dianne@campakomak.com>

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year and warmest wishes to you and your family from Camp Ak-O-Mak!

2018 will be an exciting year for Camp Ak-O-Mak as she celebrates her 90th Anniversary!  This is a monumental achievement for a small, non-profit camp as more and more have given way to larger 'institutional' settings over the past 20 years.  We extend our heartfelt thanks to the volunteers and friends who have been a help to us in continuing the Ak-O-Mak legacy for the next generation of girls.

Ak-O-Mak's inaugural Adult Sports Camp in 2017 was a resounding success according to our "campers" and we are looking forward to a repeat performance in 2018.  Adult campers enjoyed activities ranging from reading/relaxating on the dock, fishing the local waters, swimming their first Ak-O-Mak Mile, developing Tri skills or biking around the lake.  Every meal was a 5-Star dinning experience a la Chef Samson!! (Check out cookingwithsamm on facebook).   This camp's program is adult-friendly and includes wine with dinner, fireside yoga, expert motivational talks and so much more...all adult-optional!

Registration for our Main Camp Sessions is already quite active and we anticipate being sold out again this year.  Our summer schedule is very busy due to the rich and evolving programming.  One of the highlights is the paddling program, a favourite due to the Regatta trip to Ottawa, Canada's Capital.  The girls LOVE the combination of the competitive experience followed by some sightseeing around the parliament buildings then shopping together on our way home.

Ak-O-Mak's triathlon program has grown immensely over the past 10 years.  We are the only ALL -GIRLS' Tri Team at every triathlon that we attend and leave quite an impression wherever we go!  Ak-O-Mak is the only sports camp in North America that takes a team out to compete in triathlons.  These events are fun, inspiring, challenging and always capped off with ICE CREAM...always a crowd pleaser!...("I scream!  You scream!  We ALL scream for ICE CREAM!")

We continue to enhance the Ak-O-Mak experience for our campers, be it learning triathlon skills, mountain and road biking, paddling or open water swimming.   Additional forest areas are carefully bushwhacked to develop our woodland trails.  The campers enjoy other activities such as Colour Runs, Net Ball, Tennis Tournies & the weekly Parry Sound Road Bike Time Trials.  Of course, camp just wouldn't be "camp" without sailing with friends on a sunny day, yucking it up in the cabin prepping for Lip Sinc or Skit Night or the mounting excitement of Team Comp!

A highpoint of 2018 will undoubtedly be the Ak-O-Mak 90th Reunion Weekend...open to all alumni, family and friends.  All ages are welcome!...Your chance to be a camper again (with optional Early Bird)...rekindle friendships, paddle a canoe or swing in a hammock, sing in the Main House or at Camp Fire.  Pre-registration is required so please visit our website at campakomak.com.  (Remember to click on "Rates & Dates" then "scroll down" to 90th Reunion Information.)

Now for the BIG, BIG ANNOUNCEMENT of 2018!....

Camp Ak-O-Mak has been selected by the organization, Volunteer Builders, to be the beneficiary of their annual Volunteer Build Project for 2019!  Following an interview and site visit, Ak-O-Mak was chosen as the worthy, non-profit camp for Southern Ontario.

Volunteer Builders is an organization comprised of professional contractors, architects, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, painters...you name it...who donate their time, energy and expertise to construct a much needed building for a worthy camp...in our case, a   "Pavilion" for Camp Ak-O-Mak.

This wonderful group brings130 skilled men and women to live at Camp for 4-5 days while professionally constructing a much needed, multi-purpose building for Ak-O-Mak. This flexi-use-Pavilion has been a dream of ours for years...to accommodate our campers during inclement weather, to permit the expansion of our sports program and even store our beautiful road bikes and cedar strip canoes during winter.

You can learn more about this amazing organization and view their previous projects at volunteerbuilders.org

Camp Ak-O-Mak is required to raise the funds for the purchase of all building materials.

Therefore, Camp Ak-O-Mak will be launching her first ever, fundraising campaign in order to break ground in spring of 2019.   Our goal is to have the Pavilion ready for use for the 2019 camp season!  Please stay tuned for additional information throughout the year.

We hope to see you at the lake in 2018!

Fwd: Two must read articles

From John H

Attached are two "must read" articles both of which deal in one way or another with the future of American "democracy".  The first, by eminent historian Jackson Lears.  It is perhaps the best I have encountered anywhere concerning the Russian hacking story and what it means for the ability of the American people to regain our democratic institutional processes which are rapidly being discarded and destroyed by the exclusion of dissent and the envelopment of society in a neo-McCarthyist mindset.

The second brief article by Norman Solomon follows on with some comments about how Americans concerned with these processes should respond to the neoliberal/neoconservative nature of the Democratic Party elite which has shown no interest whatsoever in modifying its pro-corporate, pro-Wall Street, pro-military interventionist policies in order to focus on the real needs of the people it claims to represent.

I strongly encourage you to read both.

Fwd: This Week in News for Senator Rand Paul - December 22, 2017

Date: Fri, Dec 22, 2017 at 4:49 PM
Subject: This Week in News for Senator Rand Paul - December 22, 2017
To: <mark@rauterkus.com>

Dear Friend,

Before we get into this week's events, Kelley and I want to wish you and yours a Merry Christmas!  We recorded a special Christmas message for you that you can watch HERE.

May your holiday season be filled with joy and peace as we close the book on 2017 and welcome in a new year.

You can find my latest update from a busy week in Washington below!

Dr. Rand Paul Applauds Passage of Tax Reform

On Wednesday, the Senate delivered on its promise of allowing Americans to keep more of their hard-earned money by passing tax reform, a commitment I worked to hold it to by fighting to make sure the bill became a bigger and better tax cut and included repeal of the Obamacare individual mandate.

I applaud this reform, which will lead to economic growth, greater business investment, and new opportunities for the American people.

This legislation repeals the burdensome Obamacare individual mandate that punishes Americans who do not purchase health insurance, and it nearly doubles the standard deduction for individuals and married couples, while also leveling the playing field for our job creators.

Already, we are seeing this legislation make a difference, as major companies have announced changes following its passage, including raising workers' salaries, providing $1,000 bonuses, increasing giving to charity, and investing more funds here at home.

Before the vote, I stated in my video message from Washington this week (which you can watch HERE) that the bill is a good start to bringing tax relief to every Kentuckian, and I urged Congress to support it so we could go into the holidays knowing we honored our promise.

As we approach a new year, I look forward to continuing the fight for limited government, lower taxes, and individual liberty for all.

Dr. Rand Paul Offers Congress a Chance to Stick to Budget Caps

Shortly before the Senate voted last night to fund the government through January 19, I forced it to also hold a vote on abiding by Congress' own PAYGO ("Pay As You Go") budget requirements instead of once again ignoring them.

"We have a real problem in our country, and we must do something about it. Ultimately, there will be a day of reckoning.  You cannot continue to borrow so much money," I said on the Senate floor.

"Who's willing to say, 'You know what?  I'm for tax cuts, but I'm also for saying, across the board, we need to have spending restraint,'" I asked my fellow senators.

Though the Senate opposed my attempt to rein in its spending, I will continue speaking out as debate resumes in January.

You can find my speech from Thursday night HERE.

(Dr. Paul Challenges the Senate to Stop Running Up the Debt - December 21, 2017)

Dr. Rand Paul and Sen. Ron Wyden Lead Bipartisan Press Conference to Call for Reform of Government's Surveillance Tools

On Tuesday morning, U.S. Senators Mike Lee (Utah), Patrick Leahy (Vermont), and Steve Daines (Montana) joined Senator Ron Wyden (Oregon) and me for a bipartisan press conference to discuss Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which was scheduled to expire at the end of December, and the need to protect Americans' civil liberties through FISA reform.

During the event, I called for "a full-throated debate on reforming, controlling, and overseeing this enormous power we allow our intelligence community to have."

Demonstrating how support for surveillance reform crosses political lines and unites Americans, we were also joined at the event by representatives from both the conservative grassroots organization FreedomWorks and the ACLU.

As I have previously mentioned, Senator Wyden and I introduced the USA Rights Act (S. 1997) in October to reform Section 702 of FISA and end warrantless backdoor searches of Americans' calls, emails, texts, and other communications that are routinely swept up under a program designed to spy on foreign targets.

When Congress voted to fund the government for a few more weeks last night, the resolution also temporarily extended Section 702.  At our Tuesday press conference and throughout the week, I made it clear I will oppose any long-term reauthorization of warrantless searches of American citizens, and this includes filibustering such an attempt, if necessary.  We must have a serious, meaningful debate, and we must have reform.

You can watch video of my and Senator Wyden's opening remarks at our press conference HERE.

Dr. Rand Paul Meets with the Caudill Seed Company

On Thursday, I had an opportunity to meet with Dan and Corey Caudill from the Caudill Seed Company, which is based in Louisville.

We talked about Caudill Seed's background and operations, and we also discussed topics including the state of their industry and reducing bureaucratic overreach.

(Dr. Paul with the Caudill Seed Company - December 21, 2017)

Dr. Rand Paul Releases Special "Festivus" Edition of The Waste Report

Today, I released a special "Festivus: Airing of Grievances for 2017" edition of The Waste Report, which again shines a spotlight on wasteful spending and misplaced priorities that put taxpayers on the hook for the federal government's bad management.

In its three years, my Waste Report series has documented approximately $6 billion in wasteful spending.

This year's collection also includes excerpts from "Worldwide Waste: How the Government is Using and Losing Your Money Abroad," a 2017 Waste Report series that documented more than $3 billion of wasteful, taxpayer-funded endeavors overseas.

Highlights from the Festivus Waste Report include the IRS failing to recover over $76 million in "unallowable expenses" to government contractors, and the Department of Transportation spending $1.5 million on a park bathroom in Queens, NY.

You can find my "Festivus: Airing of Grievances for 2017" edition of The Waste Report, which totals up over $560 million in waste, HERE.

Media Wrap-Up

This week, I was interviewed on shows including Fox News' America's Newsroom and spoke on the radio with Leland Conway and Tom Roten.  I also had a chance to discuss FISA reform with Circa, and you can read their report HERE.

Fwd: Mixed bag

---------- Forwarded message
From: John H

It's very near the holidays so a very merry chug of holiday cheer to all who read this!

Attached are two very different pieces, but both worth reading – particularly if you are one of those tempted to invest in bitcoins for Christmas.  It is now pretty clear that the current bitcoin frenzy is mirroring the Dutch tulip bulb bubble in the 1500's; so, if you elect to proceed, do so with great caution and be prepared to lose a great deal.

The second article is particularly important for those who still believe that the mainstream media provides accurate reporting when it comes to Russia and the U.S. activities in and toward Russia.  It is written by Mark Ames, the founder and editor of the The eXile an ex-pat satirical news sheet and Matt Taibbi published in Russia during the Yeltsin years and into the Putin years when it was shut down by the Russian government.  Ames wrote is as a defense of his integrity after he was demeaned in a 'hit piece' by Kathy Lally, a reporter for the Washington Post, in the Washington Post, years after the supposed events took place.  It is important because Ames provides an interesting inside examination of the types of reporting done by mainstream journalists operating out of Moscow during those years.  It is worth a good look.

Merry Christmas and a joyous New Year to all and to all a good night.

No practice policy at PPS throughout the holidays is a way to soil the slogan, EXPECT GREAT THINGS.

UPDATE: I got a call from the PPS COO and we were granted permission to practice on a couple / few days of the winter break. Permits were submitted.

- - original post - -

Hi Dr. Hamlet:

Coaches need to coach. Athletes need to practice.

It is CRAZY to not grant the varsity swim teams, and, for that matter the coaches and players for the varsity basketball teams and wrestlers, NO ACCESS to their high school facilities for the duration of the Christmas break.

Teams should be able to use the facilities in the schools on these dates:
Saturday Dec 23
Wednesday, Dec 27
Thursday, Dec 28
Friday, Dec 29
Saturday, Dec 30

The teams could hold practices within the window of time from 9 am to 2 pm on those days.

No games. No outside teams, but we need practice times.

We have had problems with this in past years. We have had been granted practice time last year. In other years, not so much. I've stood in the lobby of our school one year with 15 kids ready to go to practice on December 26 and been refused entry to the swim pool by the custodian because the principal did not sign off on the pool permit.

This year they're not even allowing any permit to be written.

Other school districts often hold three practices a day over the holidays. We get NONE. We want to compete.

Fwd: Start &Turn Clinic @ Chatham University on January 6th

---------- Forwarded message ---------

Dear Middle School Swim Team & Parents,

Chatham University's Swim Team coaches will be holding a Starts/Turns Clinic at Chatham pool near the end of the Ellis Winter Break, and I'm forwarding information for those of you who may be interested to attend!

It is for Grades 5 through 8, and will go from 12:30 PM - 500 PM.  The cost is $40.00, and registration is here:  Chatham Start and Turn Clinic.

They will cover open turns and flip turns, forward starts, backstroke starts, and relay takeoffs.  I haven't worked these as much into our workouts as much as I'd like due to our limited time in the water, so this is a great opportunity to dedicate time to these skills which really merit full periods of concentration.  The Clinic will be instructed by Head Coach Carter Crosby and great coaching staff.  Coach Carter has been a big supporter of the Ellis team and has been a mentor to myself in many aspects of coaching, so you're going to get good stuff!

This is an "off" weekend for Allegheny Mountain swimmers, so there are no AMS meets going on that weekend, and it's during the Ellis Winter Break, too.

Thank you separately for those of you who have expressed interest in practicing through the Winter Break, and please stay tuned for more word on that.

Ok, stay healthy, and see you all on deck,
Coach Ed
