This will be an extremely interesting and important presentation from two Pittsburghers who travelled to the West Bank and experienced for themselves the conditions there.

Dear Friends

I hope you will attend this event.

What Two Jews Learned First-Hand in the West Bank

Thursday September 7th from 7:00 - 9:00 pm

@ the Space Upstairs 214 N. Lexington St. Pittsburgh PA 15208

Father-daughter duo Bob and Moriah Ella Mason will give a presentation about their experiences working with the Center for Jewish Nonviolence in the West Bank this past summer.

In June of 2017 The Center for Jewish Nonviolence brought together 150 Jews fromall over the world to mobilize around the Sumud Freedom Camp - an encampment of Palestinians, Israelis, and internationals that is reclaiming a Bedouin village in the West Bank for the former residents who were expelled in the 1990s.

Bob and Ella will share the story of this campaign and their experience participating in creative nonviolent resistance across the West Bank. They will also share some background about the Occupation and how it functions, stories from our Palestinian hosts and partners, and how people in Pittsburgh can support the movement for Palestinian liberation

This event is free; donations will be collected to support Sumud Freedom Camp from those who are able.

Fwd: Chris Hedges nails it . . .

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: John H

Attached are two pieces, one by Chris Hedges and an op-ed by Clive Crook.  I'm sure that many will find these to be controversial, but I am convinced that both are correct.  There is currently a massive effort to divide and conquer the American public – and, to be certain there are some very major differences among us.  There are, however, significant areas in which most of us can find room for agreement.  The problem is that the major mainstream media outlets – on both sides – seems to be working night and day to ensure that we will never be able to come together to discuss them.  We must somehow come to understand that this only serves to benefit the ruling class and never works in the favor of the rest of us.  It is a classic strategy which has been employed for centuries, but it has never been employed as effectively as it is today.  We must constantly work to find the issues we agree on and avoid focusing solely on those issues on which we disagree if progress is ever to be made toward that elusi8ve goal of 'a more perfect union'.  Human societies have never agreed on everything, but the most successful ones have learned to agree and implement the most important ones.  Ours is now far from falling into the orbit of the most successful; and, if ours is to survive much longer, we will have to figure out how to talk with each other and to work together for meaningful change.

Think about it before buying into the propaganda hype being constantly spewed forth from the major media outlets.

2nd day of classes for fall semester -- and it is like a 'snow day' for Tulane, in NOLA

Dear Parents:

As you know, classes have been cancelled at Tulane University for Tuesday, Aug. 29. This closure is not due to any change in the forecast of Tropical Storm Harvey or the storm’s expected impact on Tulane. Rather the closure was necessitated by the mayor of New Orleans who, out of an abundance of caution, recommended New Orleans residents stay home on Aug. 29 because faulty equipment has reduced the city’s capacity to drain rainwater from streets. This could result in street flooding in certain neighborhoods located miles from campus. While our New Orleans campuses are closed, our food services will still be in operation, as will the Reily Recreation Center, Howard-Tilton Memorial Library and other limited student services. The only effects we are expecting from Tropical Storm Harvey will be some heavy rainfall. Please be assured that your students are safe and likely looking forward to an unexpected day off.

Please visit tulane.edu/emergency for the latest information.

Sports Town Pittsburgh

The Final Post - Sports Town will cease operations in October, 2017

Written by Ken Wunderley on Saturday, 26 August 2017 5:05 am.

Below is a message from Sports Town Editor Ken Wunderley.

In 2010, Tri-State Sports & News Service and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette teamed up to form the Sports Town web site. Sports Town provided excellent coverage of all high school sports for 6 1/2 years.

We were fortunate to have McDonald's as our sponsor during a six-year run, but the corporation has decided to end its sponsorship.

After an unsuccessful three-month search for a new sponsor, the Sports Town web site will cease operations in the near future.

The web site will be shut down at the end of October, so feel free to go back and find any posts or photos that you would like to save.

I would like to thank all the writers and photographers who contributed to Sports Town, especially writer Brad Everett (my right-hand man) and photographer Marilyn Schwilm. The full list of writers and photographers who have contributed over the years are listed below.

I also would like to thank McDonald's, for its six years of sponsorship, along with the many high school coaches, athletes, and fans who visited our site. Your support is greatly appreciated.

And lastly, I would like to thank Post-Gazette Executive Editor David Shribman, for giving me the opportunity to head up Sports Town, and Post-Gazette Assistant Managing Editor Matt Kennedy, for all his help with creating the web site and overseeing its operations.

I am currently working on a WPIAL and PIAA history site. My hope is to find a sponsor and unveil the site on Oct. 1. I will keep everybody updated on my progress.

Fwd: Slavery, Genocide & Racism

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: John H

With all of the discussions of slavery, genocide and racism being thrown around for the past couple of weeks, perhaps it would be a good idea to actually talk about the real history of these institutions in the history of this nation.  In the attached article, Paul Street, presents a compelling review of these sordid topics.  Most Americans lack this knowledge and really do not want to know about and understand that this nation was from the very beginning, not just of the nation, but also from its earliest days as a British colony fully dedicated to the slavery of Africans and the genocide of aboriginal natives.  And, while those official policies no longer exist, much of this behavior continues to exist in a variety unofficial treatment and behaviors.  The remnants of these destructive ideas are utilized by our 'betters' to insure that we fail to see and/or understand the class divisions which prevent important movements against power and privilege.  By all means DO Read Street's excellent article.

TYR SPORT SIGNS 2X OLYMPIC MEDALIST LIA NEAL

Seal Beach, CA — August 24, 2017 — TYR Sport is proud to announce the signing of 2x Olympic medalist Lia Neal to its roster of sponsored athletes.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Lia garnered worldwide attention in 2012 when she earned a bronze medal for her swim in the 100-meter freestyle relay at the Summer Olympic Games in London. Still a high school student, Neal became the first swimmer from Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics (AGUA) Swim Team, where she had been swimming since the age of eight, to both make and medal in the Olympic Games.

However, Neal was only just beginning to set herself apart. As a member of Stanford University Women's Swimming & Diving, Lia earned a national championship title every year since 2014. She finished her collegiate career as a nine-time National Champion, winning three of those titles this year.

In 2016 Lia qualified for her second Summer Games, this time in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As a member of the women's 400-meter freestyle relay Neal earned her first Olympic silver medal. Since Rio she has continued to increase her international presence with major swims including a gold medal performance in the 400-meter freestyle relay at the 2017 FINA World Championships. She is currently a 6x World Championship medalist.

Today, Lia joins a growing roster of standout swimmers including 12x Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte, 7x Olympic medalist Dana Vollmer, 6x Olympic medalist Matt Grevers, 2x Olympic medalist Leah Smith, 2x Olympic medalist Cody Miller, Olympic gold medalist Kelsi Worrell and Olympic gold medalist Tom Shields. To date team TYR has earned a total of 35 Olympic and 193 World Championship medals.

"I am very happy to announce my partnership with TYR. This is truly the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for me, and I am thrilled to see what the future holds." said Neal.

"We are proud to welcome Lia Neal to the team TYR family," began Chief Executive Officer Matt DiLorenzo. "At a young age she has already proven herself to be an incredible talent, and we are looking forward to supporting her as she continues to grow as an athlete."

Fwd: Back-to-School event: Playing well with others is a skill set that we all still need to teach and practice.

Hi Friends:

Did you see the wonderful article in a recent Post-Gazette about Swim & Water Polo?

+ + +

In my opinion, we need to:

-> TEACH,
-- > PRACTICE,
---> Model,
----> LEARN,
-----> and CHAMPION community skills that express the concepts of

*** PLAYING WELL WITH OTHERS! ***

+ + +

Across American and around our city, we need to work hard and insure that everyone can play well with others.

So, let's do it on Monday at #WeArePPS, a back-to-school special event at Langley K-8 School. Langley is at 2940 Sheraden Blvd, Pittsburgh, PA 15204.

Bring your swim suit, towel and optional goggles. We'll swim indoors and play a full-pool SKWIM game.I'll bring the disks, fins and head bands. We'll flash the lights to simulate the eclipse -- or something.

Varsity swimmers -- from anywhere -- are needed to assist.

Tonight, Thursday, at 6 pm is the final outdoor water polo game at Citiparks Ammon Pool, Bedford Ave & Memory Lane. We've had a wonderful summer there. Thanks Citiparks.

In the fall, we'll start up the Saturday Swim School.

Here's another example of just how nefarious and persistent neoliberalism is in attempting to distort reality in order to usher in policies intended to support corporate as opposed to individual or worker interests.  But, as the second article implies, neoliberal policies almost always lead to outcomes in which economies collapse and corporate malfeasance is rewarded while individuals are harmed and left unprotected by government.  The second article should also serve as a warning to anyone expecting their personal retirement accounts to continue to grow.  In these situations debt is a killer.

Fwd: Book Musial Moments for your school

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: St. Louis Sports Commission's Sportsmanship Foundation

Book Musial Moments for your school
Musial Moments at "The J" in Creve Coeur
The St. Louis Sports Commission has created an innovative program fostering civility, respect and selflessness among young people in the St. Louis region. Inspired by the great Stan Musial, the organization is visiting schools in the metro area to introduce the concept of "Musial Moments" and to instill the qualities of sportsmanship on and off the field.
Presentations are led by Solomon Alexander (a.k.a. The Sportsmanship Guy), the director of the Sports Commission's Sportsmanship Foundation. Through a fun and interactive 45-minute session, students are motivated to care about sportsmanship and to be good to those around them - just as Stan the Man did during his illustrious career and life.
Funding from Sports Commission supporters enables this program to be offered at no cost to participating groups. To bring Musial Moments to your school or youth organization, call 314-345-5130 or email salexander@stlsports.org.
