President's next visit

President Bush visits Pittsburgh again on Saturday at the Convention Center. The rally is on the heels of the Kerry-Edwards convention in Boston.

Tickets to the event will be available at two locations in Allegheny County beginning on Wednesday at 9:00 am.

  1. Victory 2004 Center, 125 Hillvue Lane in McCandless (off Route 19 a quarter of a mile south of Cumberland Road), 412-369-7197. Open Wednesday and Thursday 9:00 am to 9:00 pm and Friday 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.

  2. Bethel Park American Legion Post, 2409 Bethel Church Road. Open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Tickets will be available for committee members and their families only at both locations beginning at 3:30 this afternoon, as recognition by the Bush-Cheney campaign of all the hard work you do for the Republican party here in Allegheny County. Name, address, social security number, and date of birth are needed for each person for whom you are picking up tickets, and the person picking up the tickets will be required to show photo ID (as will every adult attending the rally on Saturday).

On Saturday, doors open from 1:15 and close at 3:30. The President is expected to speak shortly after 4 pm. Arrive early to avoid the wait in line. Arrive after 2:30 and run a risk of still
being outside as the doors close.

The current resident of the White House will be back in Pittsburgh on Saturday, July 31 at 4:00 pm at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. We will gather at 3:45 pm on the corner of Tenth and Penn Ave. This time around, Bush will be greeted by his base, Billionaires for Bush. **We also need help housing 5 or 6 Billionaires for the weekend. Please email tim@thomasmertoncenter.org if this is something you are able to assist with.

BILLIONAIRES FOR BUSH
Mobilizing Humor and Creativity to Take Back Our Nation

Billionaires for Bush, a do-it-yourself street theater and media campaign that uses humor to flush out the truth about the Bush administration’s disastrous economic policies, is coming to Pittsburgh. The Get on the Limo tour, the Billionaires newest and most hands-on campaign, is sweeping through battleground swing states putting a local spotlight on the concerns of the very rich. Billionaires in their finest formal attire will parade through cities large and small from Oshkosh, WI to Cleveland, OH, holding “Rallies for the Really Rich”, “Cheney is Innocent” vigils, and face-to-face discussions with the local gentry.
The tour will further expand on the over 60 local chapters in the fast-growing Billionaires for Bush phenomenon. See www.billionairesforbush.com for more information.

Momentum is Building for August 15 "Healthcare Not Warfare" Rally and March --But we need your help to make it a success

There are still many things we need volunteers for in the next couple of weeks and on the day of the event itself.

Outreach:
a.. As always, we need your help to spread the word about the events on August 15. Flyers can be downloaded from either the www.thomasmertoncenter.org or the www.healthcarenotwarfare.org website. Flyers can also be picked up at the Thomas Merton Center during open hours Mondays through Fridays from 9 am to 5 pm. We have thousands of newsprint inserts by PUSH that give background information on single-payer healthcare and announce the Market Square rally and march. If you would like a flyer tailored to your particular group and need assistance email hegemony02@yahoo.com. Faith communities can email patrick.fonzo@richmond,edu to be involved in the interfaith network mobilizing for the event. Anyone interested in the Pink Bloc and able to assist with outreach can email tbamy@yahoo.com. We are also expecting a contingent of Veterans marching together from Veterans for Peace, NAACP Veterans Affairs Committee, Coalition of Veterans Advocates and Veterans for Kerry. Any groups coming in from out of town that may need housing, etc. should contact tim@thomasmertoncenter.org as soon as possible.
b.. We also need people to take the initiative and hand out flyers at all events you attend from now until August 15. No one needs permission to attend a meeting or event and help spread the word! A listing of such events can be located at www.thomasmertoncenter.org/calendar.
c.. If you are interested in Organized "flyering brigades" email hegemony02@yahoo.com
d.. We will be doing Phone banking to various lists, mostly during the day at the Thomas Merton Center, 5125 Penn Ave. If you are available contact marie@thomasmertoncenter.org or tim@thomasmertoncenter.org

Logistics:
a.. We need a volunteer to pick up, set up, maintain and return the sound system on the day of the event. Anyone able to commit to doing this please contact tim@thomasmertoncenter.org or call 412-361-3022.
b.. We need a good number of peace marshalls for the event. If interested please contact beelneel@aol.com. A peace marshalls training is also being planned for Sunday, August 1, 2:00 pm, Thomas Merton Center, 5125 Penn Ave. (Garfield). This training is very important as we are expecting a small, but vocal group of counter-protestors and want to be prepared in responding in an effective and peaceful manner. (see message below)
c.. We could also use someone willing to commit to being a stage manager during the rally. This would entail ensuring that upcoming speakers are near the stage when it is their turn to speak and keeping people to time limits. This enables the MC to focus only on MCing and not have to worry about other logistics and it keeps the rally running smoothly. Contact tim@thomasmertoncenter.org if interested.
d.. Volunteers will be needed for tabling at the Thomas Merton Center table. Contact guru7540@cs.com if interested.
e.. Volunteers will be needed to coordinate the simple, symbolic actions at the Park Avenue Place and the Federal Building. Contact tim@thomasmertoncenter.org if interested in this part of the program during the march.
Other Ways to Support:
a.. As usual, we need donations to help defray the costs of the "Healthcare Not Warfare" festivities. The TMC Anti-War Committee also plans to take out a full-page ad in the Pittsburgh City Paper and is raising money for this purpose. All checks can be sent to the Thomas Merton Center or contributions made online through the TMC website. Please designate contributions as "August 15 event" or August 15 ad" or however you would like the money used.
b.. Banner and sign-making: The Pink Bloc will be gathering to make signs at the Thomas Merton Center, Friday, August 13, beginning at 10 am. The TMC Anti-War Committee is also having a banner and sign-making party on Friday, August 13 at 6:00 pm, also at the Thomas Merton Center, 5125 Penn Ave. (Garfield)
c.. Please consider membership in the Thomas Merton Center if you are not already a member. This will entitle you to receive The New People each month, the best way to keep informed of local peace and justice activities. More information at http://www.thomasmertoncenter.org/Get_Involved/join.htm. You can pay for your membership online or mail a check to the TMC.
d.. The next TMC Anti-War Committee meeting is Sunday, August 1, 4:00 pm at the Thomas Merton Center, Penn Ave. (Garfield) Everyone interested in helping with the "Healthcare Not Warfare" event is invited to attend!
Counter-Protest in Favor of Warfare Over Healthcare?

We received word that we will be honored with the presence of a small number of counter-protestors on August 15. Below is the message they are sending out to "organize" their people. (We know we are gaining ground when people feel a need to organize to defend the interests of the wealthy. They usually just write megachecks to politicians who put themselves up for sale!) I say we meet the challenge by out-mobilizing them 100 to one! Besides, we have our own "Billionaires for Bush" to defend the interests of the wealthy...

>From the Republicans:
Hi everyone,
I hope that you are having a great summer. I just heard about this protest that is being held on Aug 15th. So of course we are having a counter-protest. If you are in the burgh, please come out and show your support for our troops and our President. If you have any questions send me an e-mail at nsaulnie@andrew.cmu.edu and I will get you answers. Below are the details about the counter-protest. See you on the 15th! ~Nicole

OPERATION DRAGOON
At 12:00 noon on Sunday, August 15, 2004, far-left liberals are going to be staging a protest called \"Healthcare NOT Warfare.\" We are going to be there to counter them and show them that this nation is willing to defend itself when the time is right. We are asking members from all over the state to attend and show that we prefer Defense Over Pacifism. We will gather with the protestors at 12:00 noon in Market Square, followed by a march through downtown Pittsburgh, stop at the Highmark Blue Shield headquarters and the federal building and return to Market Square. Bring anything you can - your signs (this site will give you help in making them), megaphones, and most importantly video cameras and cameras to document the absurdities of the event and to help prevent violence. Please do everything you can to prepare for this event, and please make it if you can. A good turnout will be a resounding victory for conservatives across the state. I have ordered quite a few Bush/Cheney signs as well for the event. PLEASE BE THERE. Thanks!

NOTE: We will meet at Point State Park at 11:30AM so that people won't have to go through the "peaceful" protesters alone.
