BarCamp Pittsburgh is a "Go" -- next weekend

Hello!

I've confirmed a small space at the Wilkins School Community Center
for BarCamp Pittsburgh next Saturday, 22 November, 2008. The BarCamp will
be colocated with the WPLUG November meeting. Full details are
available at:

Website: http://barcamp.org/BarCampPittsburgh
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=36047457634
Upcoming: http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/1365124/

I could use your help to forward these details to any discussion
groups, mailing lists, or blogs. A blurb about the event is included
below, though feel free to create your own. If you have any
suggestions on who else I should contact about BarCamp, please forward
me their info.

Also, I'm still looking for a few other organizations to help sponsor
the event. I'm covering the costs of the venue for the day, but could
use other sponsors to provide food for lunch, t-shirts and badges (all
optional, but very nice to have). Finally, if we could get one or two
digital projectors to use for the day, that would also help out.

Thanks so much!

BarCamp Pittsburgh launches Saturday, November 22

The first BarCamp Pittsburgh will be held next weekend on Saturday, 22
November at the Wilkins School Community Center in Swissvale. The
event will be co-located with the Western PA Linux User Group’s
November members meeting. However, you don’t have to be a kernel
hacker in order to attend BarCamp. Everyone is invited: programmers,
hackers, engineers, bloggers, artists, musicians, designers, writers,
poets, creators and makers of all stripes and colors.

Pittsburgh has already held a successful PodCamp for three years
running. Like PodCamp, BarCamp is a participant created event. The
schedule and agenda is determined by the attendees at the opening
session. Unlike PodCamp which has a specific focus on new media,
BarCamp is completely open to any topics. Typically sessions have a
creator/maker bent with everyone from designers to engineers showing
off their creations and teaching others how to do the same. For more
background on barcamp, read the wikipedia article or check out the
barcamp wiki.

BarCamp will be co-located at the Wilkins School Community Center with
the WPLUG General User Meeting this Saturday. Please feel free to
come to the WPLUG meeting and then head on over to BarCamp at noon!

When: Saturday, November 22, 2008, 10:00 AM - 5:00PM
Where: Wilkins School Community Center
7604 Charleston Ave.
Pittsburgh, PA 15218

What is it?

BarCamp is an ad-hoc "unconference"-style event where technology-minded
individuals gather to share knowledge on topics that interest them.

BarCamp is not a vendor presentation. It is not driven by any outside
agenda. It exists to serve the interests of those who participate.

For more background, see http://barcamp.org/TheRulesOfBarCamp
and http://barcamp.org/WhatToExpect.

How do I sign up?

Go the the Pittsburgh BarCamp page at
http://barcamp.org/BarCampPittsburgh and add your name at the bottom.
This page will be the central source for information about the event.

Who can answer my other questions about Pittsburgh BarCamp?

Contact J. Aaron Farr at farra@apache.org.

The Western Pennsylvania Linux Users Group is holding a General
User Meeting on Saturday, November 22, 2008. The location is the
Wilkins School Community Center in Swissvale, just off I-376.
Directions to this location can be found on the WPLUG wiki at
http://www.wplug.org/w/index.php/Wilkins_School_Community_Center.

At the last meeting, four individuals were elected to the Board of
Directors. A second round of balloting will take place at this
meeting to fill the fifth and final seat. Members with voting
rights may cast their ballots in person or by mail. Mailed ballots
must be received before the meeting, and in-person ballots must be
received by the time the polls close in order to count.

While there are no formal nominees, the following members have
expressed interest in being elected as write-in candidates:
* Brian Seklecki
* Robert Turley
More details about the election can be found at http://www.wplug.org/w/index.php/Election-20081122.

WPLUG members should make every effort to attend this meeting so
we have a quorum to validly conduct business and complete the
election.

This is our first meeting to take place at the Wilkins School, and
a volunteer will be on hand a half hour before the meeting starts
to show us around. Please join us if you'd like to get familiar
with the place!

The schedule for the day's activities is:
9:30 AM - Building walkthrough
10:00 AM - Business Meeting / Election starts
10:05 AM - (approx.) Polls close / Planning session starts
12:00 PM - Election results announced / All done!

Topic: "WPLUG: Future Directions"

Rather than a technical presentation, we will be taking the
opportunity that this move has presented us to examine what WPLUG
does well, what it does poorly, and what changes might be needed
for us to fulfill our mission of being an effective regional source
of education and advocacy for Linux and other Free and Open Source
Software.

What user communities (e.g., small business, nonprofits, artists,
senior citizens, educational institutions) should we be trying to
reach? How can we recruit speakers on the topics that will attract
those people? Can we effectively use local media to get our
message heard? Where do *you* want to see WPLUG go in the next
five years?

The public is welcome, and no RSVP is necessary. The home page for
this meeting is http://www.wplug.org/w/index.php/Meeting-20081122.
If you are able to help with setup, cleanup, or other duties, please
sign up in the "Meeting Staff" section. Thanks!
