Uptown landowner accused of opening illegal lots - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review 'What you're basically doing is gutting the neighborhood,' said Michael D. Eversmeyer, a Highland Park architect and former chairman of the city's Historic Review Commission. 'It's a purely individual economic decision made by a property owner with no concern for the community around him. You'll (eventually) get this scorched earth situation around Mercy Hospital and Duquesne University.'This guy has the right to do whatever he wants with the property he owns. Well, he should have those rights. But, we've put a bunch of zoning and red tape matters onto property owners.
Not fair -- crys one parking lot owner.
Well, the city has rewarded these types of behaviors with its regressive property tax policies.
The land-value tax would help to fix this poor use of urban properties.
Furthermore, this goes into the relm of proving that people just don't want to live right next door to a hockey venue -- if it is located in The Hill District.
There is a lot to talk about on this type of story.

Go to www.UptownPittsburgh.com to learn the real deal about Sal Williams.
Sal Williams is the only one that had the balls to take the risks to get rid of the hookers and crack heads in Uptown!
Is Salvatore C. Williams, 78 of Carnegie really the big bad wolf or the hero of Uptown?
The real question is: Who is Sal hurting and who else is doing anything in Uptown besides him?
I think that this Paul Eversmeyer Historic Preservation guy is an ass and he has no business sticking his nose where it clearly does NOT belong. Keep on gettin'em Mr. Sal Williams!
I did some extensive research and this man Mr. Salvatore C. Williams did in fact serve exactly 9 months in the Federal Correctional Institution (minimum security; no bars and no fences)located in Morgantown WV for taking numbers bets. Supposedly he was asked to fill a void (while Ironworking for Local Union #3)after one of the big numbers guys in the Hill district passed away. No other crimes were on his record, not even tax evasion. Anyway, I could not find any other verification for him being tied to the Western PA Mafia, per the History of the Pittsburgh La Cosa Nostra Families.
This is simple: If his parking lots really are illegal and he is not paying taxes on them then he should be put in jail. Nobody is above the law, not even our elected politicians! If what he is doing in Uptown is on the "Up and Up" then he should be left alone to do what he pleases. This IS America.
We have more important things to worry about in this city, state, country, and world than if this landowner is parking cars where nobody really cares. It sounds like he is out there trying to make something happen. So unless he is creating an unsafe situation and he is paying his taxes, and keeping people employed, who really gives a rat's behind?!
