I had a LTE in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette today (3/11/2007) about how a spending cap on the Iraq war might not be enough to stop it. The LTE link and text is below.
What's different about this LTE (letter to the editor) was that I got two calls
from the PG about it. The first was simply to confirm my intent to be printed. The editor who called said she agreed with everything I said and even complimented me on a particular sentence.
The second call was a few days later from another editor who wanted verification of a statement I made about routing calls to Canada to avoid US law. She had no problem with the example of outsourcing torture to avoid US law.
I told her that I remember reading it in what I think was WorldNetDaily years ago. She asked if she could soften the statement for printing since there was no proof. Since it was late Friday and they were soon going to print for the early Sunday edition, it was either soften or don't print. We agreed on wording, but I said I'd try to find the reference for her anyway and she gave me here email.
Instead of the WND reference I found another that made the case and revealed that it was even worse than I thought. (The US, England, Canada, Australia and New Zealand have routinely used each other to get around their own laws to monitor their own citizens based on an agreement made in the late 1940s.) I emailed the link to her, stayed polite and told her that fact-checking must not be dead because she really made me work for this letter.
I hope that I'm establishing credibility with the editorial staff at the Post-Gazette. Maybe the small-government viewpoint will gain credibility with them too. I did like the title they gave it.
By the way, has anyone else ever been challenged on a LTE like this?

It's naive to think that a targeted spending limit ("The Half-Trillion-Dollar Solution" by Bruce Ackerman and David Wu, March 4 Forum) is the solution to the Iraq war. Limits are easily circumvented and soon forgotten.
Years ago, during the Clinton administration, I read that government pressures telecommunications providers to route calls and e-mails through Canada to avoid U.S. wiretapping laws.
The Bush administration outsourced interrogation to Egypt to avoid torture bans.
Congress usually doesn't even read the legislation it passes. A catchy-titled "Iraq Cap Act" might also include the fine print preparing for an Iran invasion.
The fundamental problem is that our government is too big. It has too much power, too many resources, too many agendas and too many places to hide too many secrets.
Even if we manage to stop the bleeding in Iraq, that will only redirect blood to other domestic and foreign policy wounds, all too numerous in our bipartisan welfare and warfare state.
That's why the real solution must include capping all of government back to its libertarian origins, as the U.S Constitution intends. If not, our country will suffer a debilitating shock as the burden from these wounds threatens our financial and personal lives.

Letter to the editor in the PG from Mark C, with insights

City Council District 9 candidates forum in Homestead - first blush
Most of the candidates in the crowded city council district 9 race came to a forum today at the Homestead branch of the Carnegie Library of Pgh. The incumbent was absent and she had said she'd attend. Randall Taylor came an hour late.
I got an hour of video tape and will upload some of it to YouTube in the hours and days to come. Audio from start to finish was also obtained, but I'm not sure of its quality yet.
T.C. should not get a single vote. Well, she'll get the votes from her family members. She wants to snub the residents and voters by not showing up to the candidate debates. So, she should be snubbed at the polls.
All in all, a lot of nice candidates are in the race.
Most of them say things that cause fear in terms of their desires for bigger government. One said that no shovel would turn any dirt in the district unless he had been involved and was on-board with the project before it got started.
Just putting up the raw video would tell a great story in some instances. However, some of the comments need to be discounted within the clips as an over-reach of the roles of city council, however.
Great event! Good people. Some wonderful answers mixed with a few well intended but un-sound approaches.
The only other technical note, now, goes to the fact that the endorsed Democrat, a 22 year old women who has graduated from Howard University did not get the entire packet of her papers filed in the right place at the right time. However, at this point there has been no challenge filed. Time will tell.

The Pens didn't threaten to leave the city the other day. It has been a threat for nearly a decade. That has been a lingering threat, just as we've had a lingering bailout.
Mistick talks about 'smart money' giving the mayors job to one guy over the other. That's the problem. Why is "smart money" going to rule? Rather, I'd love to see smart voters make the decisions. Money and ideas are not one in the same. Nor is money and capacity to govern one in the same.
Moreover, when the money goes to one, that might be more of a burden when it comes to doing what's best for the people, day-in and day-out.

I want the fusses to be contained in boxes that I control.
Furthermore, we had the opinion that we'd be able to see the baby -- and hold him/her (we didn't want to know the gender) -- and make sure that the name fit the new face.
Your first caller to the show was right on with the reservations. Keeping the name a 'secret' makes some sense. Or, do what we've done, -- release a really bad name as a spoof name.

I'll get to mingle with these guys tonight at the Frick Middle School Swim Team Banquet. That's Allegheny County Council President, Rich Fitzgerald (on the left). The other good looking guy is the mascot for the Frick Middle School Team. The photo was taken at the city league's middle school championships last month at Oliver H.S.
Mr. Fitz and I are both proud dads of swimmers, --- err, fast swimmers.
We rush there after our swim practice. Personally, I need to be swimming more so I can swim with the Hector Dolphins and prepare for my upcoming race (Pgh Triathlon).

Feelings about Pens and meeting on the March 8
I'm just pondering. Perhaps I'll vent and then take this post away after the real news comes. But, if I was a betting guy, and I'm not, I'd predict the following outcome from the meeting slated to occur on Thursday. They'll huddle out of town and include the NHL boss.
My hunch is that a one-year extension will be forthcoming. The Pens will play another year at the Civic Arena. Other decisions will be made later. Meanwhile, the Pens will continue to talk to and pursue all options, in Pittsburgh and elsewhere.
Just a hunch, not a wish.

When the Libertarian Party began, founder David Nolan did not promise electoral victories. (On the national and statewide level, his lack of promise has mostly been kept.) He suggested, rather, that the Libertarian’s existence could lead to increased media attention for libertarian ideas, which might bring more latent libertarians out from hiding, and create a permanent institution to spur them into action, and help further a breakdown of political dominance by the traditional right and left by providing a pro-liberty home to forces on either end of the political spectrum who might not feel comfortable with the rest of their electoral coalition.
I'm not going to promise electoral victories in my quest as I stand for office in 2007. I do exist. The Libertarian Party is present. We are making efforts so as to show up. I care about media attention so as to advance libertarian ideas. I want to do outreach and bring out and along others with some warmth to various libertarian approaches. We need to create a more permanent community and network to spur others into action. We need to breakdown one party political dominance. I want to provide insights so our home and region can be known as a pro-liberty place.

Suspension for e-mail baffles Mt. Lebanon dad
Here comes another goofy story from the Blue Devils of Mt. Lebo. It centers upon parenting, email, a police raid on a party, under age drinking, some swear words, and honesty. Plus, it unfolded in Mt. Lebo, of all places.
The dad's acts of supporting the coach concerning the punishment is fine. To wear a coat and tie or else a uniform is interesting.

If they feel his e-mail crossed the line, they are well within their right to suspend him, and I can live with that,' the father said. 'But, if you are going to suspend a kid for [sending] an e-mail to a coach, how in the world do you not suspend ... kids for going to a drinking party and one of them for getting arrested there?I don't know the facts well enough to say what I would do if I was in this situation. At first glance, I'm sure that there is a 'teachable moment' woven in the saga. One of goals is to be, raise and coach "literate athletes." How to use email, and how to write for clarity and self-expression in important.
'Even if it is just that they are suspended by not starting the game, or being suspended for a quarter or something. By not doing anything to the other kids, who I feel did something far worse, Joey David is a hypocrite.'
Ollie Phillips said David has asked Shane to sit on the bench, in uniform, at the game on Saturday even though he won't be allowed to participate.
'That will not happen,' the elder Phillips said. 'He'll sit there in a coat and tie and be supportive, but he will not be paraded out there in a uniform if he's not going to play. Joey David will not embarrass my son.'

Joe Weinroth goes for Judge -- not controller
The Trib is reporting that Joe Weinroth won't be a GOP candidate for mayor nor controller. He went to where his heart told him to go. He is running for the bench.
I was wrong in my posting that he'd go into the city's controller race. Munch, munch.
Joe and I spoke on the phone. I may need to munch on prior words again. Seems he was being realistic in his choice most of all. His heart may say Mayor and Controller, but the voters of the city present little hope of getting him elected to those posts. Joe is the lone Republican. But, most of the candidates cross-file.
Joe now has stepped away from his 'R party' roles with a leave of absence for his election as judge candidates need to be 'non-political.'
I was wrong in my posting that he'd go into the city's controller race. Munch, munch.

Marty was talking about Dan Onorato, a frequent guest. Dan is slated to be on the show on Thursday with his talk to the County Executive segment. The show host's comments touched a nerve. Right after the show, I wrote Mr. Griffin via his web form.
There are people who are running against Dan Onorato -- including ME.
Either you lie by design or you play ignorant for unknown reasons. What's up investigative reporter?
You were going to book me on the show -- then the convention center floor fell. ???

Perhaps you decided that I wouldn't be a worthy guest or that this topic didn't fit for some reason some weeks ago. I don't know why because I never heard again from you or the producers.

Penguins' letter pointed to a lack of collaboration in negotiations
Text of the Penguins' letter to Rendell, Ravenstahl and Onorato The risk has been magnified by what we perceive as a lack of collaboration from the public sector in the negotiations. That does not bode well for the public/private partnership necessary to successfully navigate the multiple issues of an arena development of this magnitude.I contend that the lacking element is the lack of a philosophical base in the negotiations. Onorato was quick to say, at first blush, that he wanted to negotiate. That isn't how it is done. In sales, one qualifiies the buyer.
Once the deal boils down to money on the table from the public treasury -- then we'll all suffer. The fan base, loyalty, disruption to business and vision needed to be prime components in the negotiations and dealings.
The next line of the letter from the Pens talks about "value." They are begging for that type of talk.

As this goes to court, all bets are off. Don Barden is smart to hold off on the building.

It is with deep solace that I announce today that I will be fulfilling my commitment to both my family and to the many Pittsburgh District 1 Democratic Committee Members I have had the honor of meeting or speaking to over the past 12 weeks, and as such, I will not be seeking the Democratic Party Nomination in this May’s Primary.Though this decision was hard to come to, it was ultimately made with the best interests of both my family & those who wish to see change in mind. The primary reason for this decision is so as to spend more time with my family. Though they have been very understanding & appreciative of the many supporters of my candidacy, my family has also suffered the most of my absence while campaigning over the over the past 5 months.

This decision, however, was also made after vast reflection and consultation with my supporters of the Democratic Party Endorsement results this past weekend. Though they surpassed our expectations and demonstrated an increase in support of my candidacy from 4% to 12%, the fact remains that 34 committee members whom did not support Ms Harris in September are still prepared to cautiously give her a 2nd chance to prove that she can change her imprudent spending ways. As such, we have concluded that it would be imprudent to add to the field of candidates running this May, and we will ‘back down’ (as we say in my industry) for now. Instead, we will consider a head-to-head run against her in November should she win in May, especially should she not heed voters warnings to change her aimless & reckless spending habits.
In closing, I would like to thank the Democratic Party for accepting me with open arms since becoming a naturalized citizen in December; the many Democratic Committee Members who either considered or actually endorsed my candidacy this passed weekend; and all the voters who have been supportive of my candidacy since last fall and who wish to see drastic change in the way City Council does business. Should our current council member continue to demonstrate a lack of good stewardship, voters will have one last opportunity to change course this November, and I am prepared to consider championing that cause at that time should they ask.

Folks, rule #1, don't burn out. Often they win by attrition. Keep plugging at your own pace. Be realistic. Take care of yourself and your home front first and foremost.
Challengers get to 'stand for office.' Make a stand. I don't want to run for office as in run around like a chicken with its head cut off. I don't want to spend $1-million to get a chance at a job that pays $90,000. Only a fool would do that and even try.
Be prudent. And, be happy with yourself.
Today I was slated to speak at the Allegheny County Council meeting. I got there, after swim practice, with my sons in tow. My youngest had fallen to sleep in the back seat of the car as we drove from the swim pool to Grant Street. My oldest was wearing shorts. I pulled the car up onto the curb so he could confirm at the county police that the meeting was still taking place.
Seems that the SEA's Mary C was on the hot seat for 90-minutes before a single bill had come to a vote. The meeting was dragging. It looked as if it would go two additional hours, as of 8 pm, so hinted the John, the county clerk. I was on the agenda and ready to speak. But my guys still had homework.
We watched as the council confirmed its first bill on the agenda, the No Sweatshop Bill. Well done Ken. Then we came home. About 40-minutes later, as we watched via the webcast eating dinner, my time to speak arrived. I was parked at home, speaking for MORE than 3-minutes, with my kids. Oh well.
I'm happy with my work ethic as a volunteer activist and a Libertarian party leader. Nonetheless, should I take an official role, I'll not skip out on meetings. My presence would be held to a different standard, of course.
I wanted to speak to council and go out of my way to give props to Vince G for recent suggestions. Some are considering the elimination of the Port Authority (PAT). I've called for the elimination of authorities in the past as well. I like some of the things I heard on council. When that happens, I cheer.

Busman's Holiday: PA Sunshine: Videotaping Public Meetings
Thank goodness for Bob Mayo from WTAE TV and the Busman's blog. Yes. Thanks Bob for the notice and the care.
Today was the day when the city planning commission was to meet again and release its rules for video taping their public meetings.
I went by the outside of the building at 200 Ross Street while they were in session, but, I could not attend. I was just speaking at another 1:30 pm public hearing in city council chambers on the new vacant property ordinance. And, a 2:30 I need to be picking up my child from school.
I'll call or visit the planning office tomorrow and might call again to the chairwoman too to find out what they propose.
So, for the moment, I'm without hard news.
However, last week when Mayor Ravenstahl, Mr. Ford, the Zoning Coordinator from City Planning and a handful of others from the administration were on the South Side I had some spirited discussions about this matter. The zoning coordinator felt no remorse and fully justified to instruct the public on what could and could not happen from one's seat at "their" meetings.
He felt that I should have seemingly asked permission before I took a few moments of video at the meeting when they were debating legislative matters.
"Hey pal," I said. "With 'rights' -- I don't need to ask you for permission."
He thought that there was a lot of case law to back him up. They had been reading up on this.
I told him it wasn't my intention to sue the city planning commission. But, that was the first blush reaction that came from the chairwoman when I first came to understand that the meeting came to a stop and signs were posted. The first day I shot the video and walked out the door. Then the planning commission folks at the front of the room got wind of my camera. But I had already departed.
After a back channel conversation or two, the chair came up with the idea of making this a topic for conversation among the staff and to work on an official policy. So fine.
The kicker of this incident came on the heels of another that involved my camera and a public meeting. I testified at the third public meeting hosted by PAT concerning the service cuts. TV cameras were all over the first two meetings on the first day, at the Hilton and in Oakland. I went into the Oakland meeting and got some film. But the tide turned. A PAT Police officer told me at the third meeting that I was not permitted to use my camera.
Here again, I was just sitting in my seat, mingling among the audience. I don't use a big tripod nor lights like Bob Mayo and TV crews.
I'm not okay with their actions. I'm calm and cool on the outside, but on the inside I'm hacked off. To make matters worse, I walked home from that meeting that PAT hosted with a former opponent and present D candidate for city council, Bruce Kraus. I told him what just happened with the PAT police officer, blah, blah, blah -- and he said it made sense to not be allowed to video tape a public meeting about a public agency. Golly.

Petitions: another punch from transit riders. Kocking Onorato
Tomorrow (Wed.) morning, March 7, at 8:30 AM, the Campaign to Stop the Bus Cuts would like you to join us to deliver the first 12,000 petitions to Dan Onorato at the County Courthouse Building on Grant Street. We're asking him to stop supporting Steve Bland and his draconian service cut proposal and start leading the march to Harrisburg for the funding that we need.
We're going to have a brief rally outside the courthouse before we go into Dan's office. If you come a little late and don't see us outside, go into the courthouse and ask one of the guards to direct you to Dan Onorato's office.
If you have petitions filled out, bring them with you. If you still have blank petitions, keep getting them signed. These 12,000 petitions are just the first of many.

An important step in getting rid of expenses would be Cuts. James C. Roddey thinks Dan Onorato is doing the right thing now. He is an Onorato booster. Onorato makes the Republicans happy. They are all twisted.
PAT is going to ove out of the expensive, downtown rented space in the next DECADE. I'd have them packing now.
The huge salary payments for management are going to continue. Meanwhile, 400 others are getting fired. For the riders, bus routes are going to go away.

These "big cuts" are worth 10-percent of the deficit. They have $50-million to go. But, these folks just protected themselves.

There are a lot of problems in the neighborhoods when it comes to police actions, bar patrons and keeping the peace. Often, the innocent wonder about "enforcment." This story, because it includes a Steeler, might become a new benchmark to watch.
What's going on?
How come some get charged and others don't?
What went down?
Can the neighborhoods get the same type of 'protection' that is dished out at Station Square?
I don't know the answers. But, the incident might open up a big can of worms. And, this chatter and understanding is welcomed on some fronts.

Did you notice that in the city council district 9 race, Randall Taylor got zero votes.
Patrick Dowd didn't do so well either.
Nor did Theresa Colaizzi.
All in all, I think that the school board behavior isn't much better than it was in the past. It is still rocky, to say the least.
The vote total for Stephanie Tecza was 74 and Heather Arnet got 27. That's a landslide. But even more was the 66 to 17 score that crushed a sitting school board member, Dan Romaniello. Way to go Sherry Hazuda, whoever you may be.

The vote total for Stephanie Tecza was 74 and Heather Arnet got 27. That's a landslide. But even more was the 66 to 17 score that crushed a sitting school board member, Dan Romaniello. Way to go Sherry Hazuda, whoever you may be.

Peduto on the Pens move
Heard Bill Peduto on KDKA Radio about the possible move of the Pens. He talked to Honz, just after the news broke.
Bill said that he stood by IOC all the way. So, he is a trusted figure to the Pens. He would be glad to enter the negotiations.
Then Bill talked that his Plan C is still a valid offer.
Bill mentioned Tom Murphy. Like Murphy or not, Tom Murphy was the guy to get the job done. Murphy built the two stadiums and convention center. Murphy didn't let the ohters in office do the heavy lifting. He means to present Luke as one who is in the back seat to Dan Onorato and Ed Rendell.
The worst thing that Bill said had to do with the Civic Arena being empty. He said that there won't be any developmet up on the Hill now if the Pens depart. Asked if he, Peduto, would pull out all stops to save the team, Bill said you have to. (Yes.)
The Pens play 40 dates at the Civic Arena.
I think that the whole thing is a mess. But, I don't think that there will be no development on the hill if the Pens leave. Don Barden's plan calls for a lot of development on the hill. So, Peduto is just out of touch on this one. Did he forget? Is he talking in the moment and out of despiration?
I think that the hill district can flourish after the Pens leave. The Pens should get off of the hill -- but land in another part of Allegheny County -- such as the airport.

City Council President wants Temporary Slots Parlor. Okay -- do it in the Convention Center
Doug Shields, D, president of Pgh City Council and candidate for Allegheny County Controller's post (against Michael Lamb, D, and Tony Pakora, D, and Joe Weinroth, R) said that the budget for the City of Pittsburgh is going to have a $10-million hole.
This $10-million amount is what Doug Shields and his fellow big-spenders on City Council counted upon as income from the slots parlor.
In the radio interview, Doug Shields called it a "casino" but it is really just a slots parlor.
The winning slots parlor outfit was granted a license by a state gambling board. However, two challenges to the granting of the license have been made. So, the green light for the building of the slots parlor for the river's edge on the North Side, next to the Carnegie Science Center, has been delayed.
The city's budget expected money in 2007 from this gambling operation. City council sets the budget and has done so in the past with phantom incomes. Gambling incomes were a part of Mayor Tom Murphy's budget in 2006. Money won't come to 2008, at the soonest.
The Majestic Star Slots Parlor on the North Side considered but nixed the idea of building a temporary slots parlor, like in a circus tent. Temporary casinos are still operational in other parts of the country. The risk is that a real building with decent design standards won't ever be completed should a temporary site become operational. The goal isn't to put a new gem onto the river's edge that looks like the I.C. Light Amphitheater.
Now that the Convention Center is empty, it makes great sense to build the temporary slots parlor as well as the permanent slots parlor within the David M. Lawrence Convention Center.

Marty Griffin was talking with Allegheny County Councilman, Vince Gasteb, R, and the words and concepts of the elimination of authorities was spoken.
I've been barking about these steps for years. Elimination, liquidation and votes of retention for authority board members have been central themes to my platform and campaign statements.
Authorities are not accountable as they should be. They've got to go away. They've gone nuts and over stepped in a zillion ways.
Furthermore, those that made and sustained this mess with authorities are the ones who are least able to clean it up.

This is another good instance to listen to the song -- Be Careful Punching Ballots If You Can't See the Hole -- by Amy Carol Webb. It has been on my CD.

Ravenstahl easily tops Peduto for party nod - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "Pokora plans to challenge the results in court this week.
He said the committee's bylaws don't address the use of provisional ballots used by those who could not show proof they were eligible to participate yesterday. Pokora has said he would not run without the committee's endorsement, but he was unsure yesterday if he would stick to that pledge given the close vote.
City Councilman Doug Shields, who received the endorsement in his council race, placed a distant third in the controller's race.
In a separate challenge, Andrea Boykowycz, a Peduto supporter, has contested the voting eligibility of 20 committee members.
Committee Chairman Jim Burn said she challenged the members' voter registration and residency. Committee members must be registered Democrats living in Allegheny County.
Burn said the committee members will be given 30 days to prove their eligibility. The results could affect some of the close races."

Lamb's one vote margin -- Joe Weinroth to Controller's Race
Joe Weinroth, former GOP candidate for Mayor, 2005, may enter the City Controller's Race. We'll know Tuesday.
That could be a great move by Weinroth, in my humble opinion.
Next, Mike Lamb needs a web site or blog. There has been some smoke in the controller's race. It may continue. But it would be nice to see one of them enter the digital realm. Who is going to bring the race to the people?
I asked on another blog about Mike Dawida. He didn't go for the D endorsement. But is he still in the race?

I talked to about 100 people today, give or take. I didn't give anything but my business card. I didn't take anything either, but observations, of course. This is America and freedom still happens here -- on sidewalks, generally. One woman did share a grumble to me about my being present. That's okay. It is her right to air her thoughts as well.
What was the verdict for Judge C.D.Jones II today. Did you see him? Did he search out MacYapper? IMHO, he would have had better luck getting votes if he would have attended the Pens Flyers game.

I arrived at the Democratic Endorsement venue on Pittsburgh's South Side early in the afternoon because I was asked to come down and support my friend Bill Peduto.
There's no question he SHOULD be our next mayor.
There were a lot of "incumbent" Luke Ravenstahl signs. Why everyone got out of the habit of referring to him as "interim," I'll never know. As of today, our interim mayor hasn't won anything other than a race of name recognition in his own back yard.
There were too many for a just-turned 27-year-old with virtually no leadership record. That's what you get when you have a disasterous, yet big money governor and a well-connected, seemingly hardworking Allegheny County executive shutting down every usual artery of campaign funding. Qualified leaders be damned, the funding fix is in.
Anyhoo, I ran into a number of friends from the neighborhood. There was one candidate who I will not name who REPEATEDLY called me an entirely different FIRST AND LAST name, despite being in earshot of me re-introducing myself to another colleague.
Embattled city councilwoman Twanda Carlisle's group had a table riddled with presumably her own campaign-funded fancy mugs inside the voting room...why she was allowed inside and everyone else was reduced to handing out pens, writing pads and other trinkets out in the hall, or outside for that matter is anyone's guess. Let's hope her mugs were not someone else's work, and she was presenting them as her own (you may remember her mother's boyfriend was paid a year's worth of city-taxpayer salary to write an essay about her constituency. It turns out the paper featured reams of "borrowed" statistics and observations from a legitimate scholarly study).
I noticed dozens of familiar faces and friends. Let me start by saying Bill Peduto has lost considerable weight and looks 32 instead of 42. Somehow his morning treadmill routines help him lose weight, while my own treadmill and weight lifting routine has only increased my size and weight.
It'll be interesting to see how this vote turns out. When a guy like Governor Tony Soprano is involved, I'm always a little worried.

It'll be interesting to see how this vote turns out. When a guy like Governor Tony Soprano is involved, I'm always a little worried.

Status quo, hog-wash thinking hits the P-G again today concerning the Dem party primary.
Tom Murphy is still eligible to be our mayor, but he had the wheels come off of his agenda. A mayor that becomes 'dead in the water' sinks and won't run again.
I think that Mayor Luke Ravenstahl has an easy time winning the primary election in 2007 and all the other times it is going to grow to be more and more difficult.
Even if William Peduto wins the primary, and then somehow wins the general election, he could be a one-time, two-year mayor.
Even if Luke becomes 'golden' and reverses his ways in terms of performance, I expect that Luke won't be mayor for a long period. Life would be a hell of a lot easier if Luke was a State Senator or a worked an administrative job for a bigger deal state or national figure.
Finally, the mayor's job in Pittsburgh needs to be put under a term limit. I'm in favor of a term limit for a city's top administrator.
If Peduto wins the office of mayor, I have a fleeting vision that he'd be happy being Pittsburgh's last mayor. He'd look to a metropolitan model and the city would just blow away in a water-main break in a season or two.

Mayor Murphy could NOT come to any neighborhood for public meetings. He wasn't welcome. Mayor Murphy, a marathon runner, could NOT even keep a marathon in this city.
You should have a better grip on history. I hate to see it when others try to re-write history.
With Tom Murphy, even the ultimate Frisbee players in town came to see Tom Murphy for what he was. He lied to them back in 2000, 2001 -- to get votes. He fooled them for a spell. But, that was the last gasp for Murphy. He could NOT even hold together the URA any longer.
If a mayor does a poor job or even an average job -- he or she will be gone, driven from office.
Bill Peduto and Luke Ravenstahl are like two peas in the same pod. Peduto is running a cautious campaign. On the net folks have asked, "What are you waiting for?" Even the P-G quote that Peduto 'seems ready to' -- that's not very aggressive. Peduto's camp has been sheltering some of his older, finished campaign position papers. They could snow Luke under 20-feet if they just opened the floodgates in Wonkville, rather than seeming to be ready to about to one day try.
Both candidates have a similar vision in that they want to to turn Pittsburgh into something that it isn't. Peduto's Goden Quadrangle is like Luke's 'significantly different place.' Same pod, different peas.
They both call to more 'experts.' They both have ideas, BUT choose to hold back. The sad thing is the P-G gives them a free pass to do so.
Opposition comes from both to the Pgh leg of the Mon Valley Toll Road, but for Luke it is after an "IF".
Both want to expand government. Luke wants government to help pay for a wet lab. Hell, we can't even get voting machines that work well. What is government's role? Peduto's government owned building seem to need diapers. It is a spit rag for one and a diaper for the other. Two peas, same pod.
Guys -- how about if the city cared a bit for the babies, the children, the kids and the PEOPLE of this city. I want to put attention onto the people, not bricks and mortar projects. They are so Murphy like. They will fail. The city's tax base isn't capable of paying for a new arena for the Pens yet alone a building that bleeds us empty.

No, no, no. We drove Tom Murphy out of office. Tom Murphy won in 2001 by spending $1-million and getting 30,000 votes in the spring. Murphy won by the skin of his teeth and was wounded politically. Tom Murphy could not have won in 2005 because he was driven from office.
In a city that hasn't driven a mayor from office since 1936, that person could be mulling whether to run again in 2013 and 2017.

More at City Planning on Bar Bill -- and Video Taping of Meetings
A number of weeks ago, I went to a city planning meeting at 200 Ross Street, Downtown. There was a packed house as they were talking about the Bar Bill. The planning committee took a vote and the bar bill went down in flames. But, while I was there, I pulled out my video camera and took a few moments of tape.
After I walked out of the room to be sure to get my kid as he exited from school that day, the meeting came to a stop. Announcements were made and signs were posted on the door. NO Recording of Meetings Allowed!
Calls were made. Freedoms are funny. You don't need to ask permission to flex one's rights.
Well, the new video policy is now on the pending agenda and will be talked about on Tuesday at the 1:30 meeting. I don't think they'll get to this topic until 2:30 or so. My child walks out the school's doors at 2:35 pm.
I don't really want to get arrested. But Anne Feeney is singing at a house concert on Sunday at 4 pm, and she has a wonderful tune about going to jail for justice. Perhaps if there are others with a video camera -- they could serve as a body double.
It would be nice if a fellow blogger, such as The Busman, could set up their video cameras around 2 pm and see what unfolds.
An update from the director about the bar bill is also on the agenda. They all got an ear full from residents last Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, my sweetheart and her mom have departed to Pheonix for five days. The boys and I are gearing up for some war films on DVD. Recent gems we've enjoyed, beyond The Guardian, include Fly Boys and Annapolis. The movie, The Marine, came into the house and left again without being watched because the snow days ended.
Suggestions of DVDs welcomed.

The Pittsburgh Comet Bill Peduto's Blog: SucksNot really.
Councilman Bill Peduto is the first major party candidate for mayor in Pittsburgh's history to have launched a weblog.
I think it is fair to say that Peduto's blog is lacking. The Luke Ravenstahl site isn't even worth the recycled electrons to complain about.
It also sucks to re-write history with information that isn't accurate.
I don't need to my name inserted into the Comet's blog as the first major party candidate for mayor in Pittsburgh to have a weblog. However, Bill's name should NOT get those honors of being first, even though it sucks.

We're proud of you Wilburn! Way to go.
He and his family are in Harrisburg today for a big banquet as he's getting honored as Pennsylvania's Social Worker of the Year.
Wilburn's been the boss of the Univ. of California PA's academic program for those seeking a Masters Degree in Social Work. He is the expert about all things concerning blacks in Appalachia. He was been working with Molly Rush and others to advance PUSH, a single-payer health coverage plan for Pennsylvania that is much unlike the one championed by Governor Ridge. He is on many boards, locally from the musical Calliope to the First Unitarian Church and the eco nonprofit on the South Side.
Finally, he, his wife, and son have been great friends. Plus, he has been on the Elect.Rauterkus.com committee as director of policy research for recent campaigns.
Now we've got to plan for more trips to Canada. He's taken a new role as the head of the school of social work in Toronto at York University. They are very lucky. Today I'm kicking myself again for sending him that job posting.

If and when I'm elected, I'll insure that all documents and data are on the web and structured within a site so the content is accessible for all Internet searches. Furthermore, I'd insist upon Plain Language so as to eliminate jargon in government communications.
I'd use open source tools, creative commons licenses if not plain old public domain, and other goodies such as Sitemaps.org tools so as to remove technical hindrances to search engine Web crawlers.
It took Google months of meeting with officials at many agencies in DC to make progress. Still, Google faces misconceptions. "Literacy about search engines is lower in the federal government than in the private sector." No joke. Literacy about technology and the free exchange of information, yet alone literacy itself, might be low in some corners of governement.
Yesterday I got an answer to my request of last week seeking an electronic file of the nomination papers so I can get onto the ballot. I'll need more than 3,000 signatures on legal sized paper forms. I asked for an electronic version of the form from the election department and was told I can't get one.
Eighty percent of visitors to government Web sites arrive through search engines rather than the home page "front door." Only about 5 percent come directly to the sites, he said, and because about half of all government Web pages remain inaccessible through search engines, a substantial percentage of people are passing up information they would otherwise find.A part-time Web manager was able to implement the Sitemaps tool in eight hours. Jeepers, in turn that utility simply opened 3 million documents to common search engines. That's bang for the buck. That's effiency.
I want to put every element of the lists of lists into Google Maps, for the city and the county. If we can map Mars and Moon -- why not Brookline and Beechview.
