Mark Rauterkus, a 2001 Repubican candidate in a contested GOP Primary in the City of Pittsburgh, has joined the Libertarian party, been elected to the party’s county board, and has accepted the nomination to run in the special election for Pennsylvania Senate slated to be held on May 17, 2005.

The special election is to fill the remaining time of the term of Jack Wagner, D., who resigned from the Pennsylvania Senate to become the commonwealth’s Auditor General.

Rauterkus is a swimming coach and community activist who has spoken out in opposition on many issues. Mayor Tom Murphy, D. Murphy is ending his third term as Mayor of Pittsburgh and will not be seeking re-election. Murphy closed all of the city’s 32 outdoor swim pools and its 19 recreation centers in a self-made crisis in 2003. Then Murphy celebrated as distressed status was handed to the city from the state officials. Now the city operates with two oversight boards.

The old party candidates for the special election are not yet know. Rauterkus secured the nomination from the Libertarians in the December board meeting and has a head start on the campaign trails.

Rauterkus is active on the internet with a blog, Rauterkus.blogspot.com; wiki, Platform.For-Pgh.org/wiki/ and an email contact list that exceeds 8,000 contacts throughout the city and region. His site, Rauterkus.com, had more than 5,000 page views on a single day at the height of the campiagn in 2001.

The latest venture with media in the Elect.Rauterkus.com campaign is with CDs and music. The candidate and guests have been on a couple of hour-long music shows, sponsored concert and benefit performances and have songs for various populations.

State Represenative, Michael Diven, formerly a D and now a R, might be a participant in the special election if he can wrestle the nomination from a long-time Republican and active member of the party committee and an elected Scott Township supervisor, David Jayson, 32, R.

The Democrats have a few who are seeking the nomination, including Wayne Fontana, a county council member who has yet to resign from his post on that board as the charter deems necessary.
